New Innovative Design - DTS 2016

New Innovative Design - DTS 2016

Andrea Johnson is an orthodontic technician working at the Royal Derby Teaching Hospital and is Vice Chair of the Orthodontic Technicians Association (OTA). She is excited to be speaking at the brand new Orthodontic Technician’s Seminar Stream at The Dental Technology Showcase (DTS) 2016 where she will deliver a presentation entitled “The Unbreakable Herbst Appliance”. Here she speaks with enthusiasm about her seminar:

“I saw the new unbreakable Herbst appliance in Italy a few months ago and I’m really excited because it's a brilliant design and I want to tell everyone all about it.

“During the seminar I will be describing the innovative new design of the appliance. The original Herbst appliance is very effective for a variety of different problems, primarily where the mandible needs to be postured forward. However, the way the components sit in the acrylic of the appliance make it very prone to breakages and so it can be unreliable. The new design of appliance that I will discuss is almost unbreakable; it has exactly the same function but it operates in a different way and is not as flimsy and fragile.

“I will cover the benefits of the new design and the reasons why technicians would want to use the appliance. The design stage will be incorporated and technicians will take away knowledge about how it can be used and also where components can be sourced. This way, technicians can order in the parts and try it out in their own lab.

“I imagine that a lot of technicians will be interested in the new design because it is not just applicable to one specific discipline. Undoubtedly, the Herbst appliance would be used more by orthodontic technicians dealing with specified cases but prosthodontic and denture technicians may also use it occasionally.

“I will join many other presenters throughout the DTS educational programme who are excited about being able to talk to technicians from across the disciplines. Having that cross-over of knowledge is valuable because the conversations, points and questions that arise offer a range of different perspectives that we ourselves may not have considered.

“I think that the co-location of The Dentistry Show and DTS does very well because it’s an exclusive arrangement. Dentists often visit the DTS area to source laboratory services and products, or to seek advice on various techniques and materials. It’s a mutually enjoyable exchange; technicians can also visit stands at The Dentistry Show to see what clinicians are using, which helps us to offer a better service for them in return.

“A lot of the other shows cater more for the clinical side of dentistry. To have a venue with a lab-dedicated area featuring a range of lab-based products and services, as well as lectures designed specifically to interest them, is extremely beneficial. I’ve seen other shows try this approach, of course, but DTS seems to be the best.”

To attend Andrea’s seminar and to take advantage of the wealth of educational and networking opportunities, book your ticket for DTS 2016 today.

DTS 2016 will be held on Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd April 2016 at the NEC Birmingham, co-located with The Dentistry Show.

Finding Solutions in Technology and Collaboration

Finding Solutions in Technology and Collaboration

Dental technicians, dentists and manufacturers all have an integral part to play in the overall patient experience. Working together as a team and utilising the very latest designs and technology can bring about solutions to previously difficult or untreatable cases.

Sharing experiences and striving towards the common goal of providing first-class dental care for patients, enables the best clinical results and can make a real difference to the outcome patients receive. From initial product design and manufacture, to the technical modifications made in the dental lab, and to the fitting and restoring phase in the dentist’s chair – teamwork is integral to success. This was one of the main themes highlighted at a recent event organised by The Parade Specialist Dental Centre, held at The Celtic Manor Resort in Newport and supported by leading implant product supplier Nobel Biocare.

The day was aimed at dentists currently placing and restoring implants, those undertaking their MSc courses and practitioners who were interested in implantology. During the inspirational and educational day, delegates had the chance to listen and learn from some of the most highly respected professionals in the field, including Dr Bertil Friberg, Dr Adrian Binney, Dr Michael Page and Dr Matthew Thomas.

Dr Friberg, an Associate Professor and Co-Chairman of the renowned Brånemark Clinic in Gothenburg, is one of the most experienced implant surgeons in the world, as well as an excellent teacher. He shared his experiences of working at the Brånemark Clinic, outlined the rich history of dental implantology and gave his insights on how the field will evolve and change in the coming years.

Dr Thomas provided an interesting lecture which included overcoming the problem of limited space with the use of the NobelActive® 3.0. This smaller and stronger implant is specifically designed for narrow spaces where practitioners may be unable to place a conventional implant, such as in the case of missing lateral incisors.

Dr Page continued with the theme of attaining new and exciting possibilities looking at options for patients using the latest technology, and covering CAD/CAM designed restorations for the edentulous. He showed how the latest technology is providing greater results for the most difficult of cases in a fascinating lecture.

Dr Binney followed this up with an equally thought-provoking presentation on the NobelProcera® Angulated Screw Channel (ASC) abutment, which is designed to offer a higher degree of restorative flexibility without using cement retained restorations and comprising aesthetics. Dr Binney showed how the ASC is perfect for placing screw retained restorations in the posterior region, as it allows for easier access and truly aesthetic anterior restorations without compromising the optimum position for implant placement .

Commenting on the event, Dr Binney said: “The day was a huge success and we were delighted to have the support of Nobel Biocare to enable us to offer delegates an educational and inspiring day.”

The day was concluded with a brilliant insight into the dental technicians’ role in a superb lecture from John Craddock, Director at Synergy Dental Laboratory in Cardiff. With John and his team present, the event provided a well-rounded account of the dental workflow, emphasising the importance of the relationship between laboratory and clinician and ensuring delegates understood the entire journey from beginning to end.

Teamwork remains essential to success and manufacturers, technicians and practitioners each have a role to play in providing patients with high quality dental care. The idea highlighted throughout the day was that of increased strength as a comprehensive team, compared to working as individuals, encouraging all to communicate effectively in order to solve challenges faced. With the correct products, right skills and successful collaboration, solutions can be found for even the most challenging of cases.

Interact with the Best in the Business - Rare opportunity 6th/7th November at The Brewery London

Interact with the Best in the Business

Providing a rare opportunity for you to learn and interact with more than 20 of the top global speakers in the field of implantology, the Nobel Biocare Team Conference 2015 is an event not to be missed.

Held on 6th and 7th November at The Brewery London, the conference offers an exceptional programme with lectures, hands-on workshops and masterclasses run by leading global professionals.

Among the outstanding speaker line-up will be Professor Sreenivas Koka, renowned for his leading expertise in the field of implantology and prosthetics. He will be presenting a masterclass alongside Professor Daniel van Steenberghe, entitled “Peri-implantitis: a tsunami waiting to happen? Facts and fallacy”.

“Reports of peri-implantitis are steadily increasing and it is up to the profession to ask what we can do to reduce its prevalence,” says Professor Koka.

“During our session, Professor Steenberghe will focus on the treatment and management of the condition, while I will look at how the disease is caused and what we can do to prevent it.

“We know that patient behaviours influence the development of peri-implantitis to some degree, but it is how we as clinicians use dental implants that will have the most significant affect. The key is in the treatment planning, before implant surgery is performed. We need to fully understand the science behind our decisions: where do we choose to place the implants, in what types of people and why?

“We used to have many concerns with regards to implantology, but as the procedure has become more common and success rates have improved, we have relaxed our approach slightly. This just needs tightening up again to ensure we create the best possible chances of clinical success.

“My section of the masterclass will focus on what we should be looking for and doing in preparation for implant placement. Particularly relevant for those who are relatively new to the field, the session will emphasise that implants will not always work well with every patient.”

Professor Koka will also present a lecture on “Prosthetic solutions for the edentulous patient: What, when and why?”, exploring the key prosthetic pathways for different solutions. Discussing the evolution of protocols and materials in this area, there will be an opportunity for debate regarding prosthetics for the All-on-4® treatment concept, prosthetic implant bridges, IBO and maintenance.

A member of the Scientific Committee and involved with the creation of the programme, Professor Koka concludes by highlighting the calibre of the event:

“This conference will celebrate how far we have come as a profession in the past couple of decades – the science and clinical experience we have developed is truly astounding. It will also highlight how much more there is yet to come.

“Historically, Nobel Biocare has been a major leader in the dental implant arena and this kind of programme will definitely keep it at the forefront. The conference will go back to basics, emphasising the science, education and research supporting the many products, materials and techniques used today. It’s a very exciting programme!”

Acteon and EuroPerio8

Acteon and EuroPerio8

EuroPerio8, the triennial world leading conference in periodontology, made its visit to London this year.

With lectures held throughout the duration of the conference, EuroPerio Platinum Sponsor, Acteon, presented lectures on Thursday and Saturday.

On Thursday, Dr Amit Patel and Donna Schembri explored the concept of ‘Seeing the Unseen’ - Utilising Fluorescent Technology for Optimal Periodontal Care.

The theme from Acteon and the two speakers was clear: improve patient understanding to empower self-care and utilise technology to see better and treat faster.

Cutting-edge products mentioned as examples for the effective removal of plaque included the Newtron P5xs ultrasonic generator, the Air n Go easy airpolisher and Soprocare - which utilises state of the art photonics technologies.

It was a similar story from the Ziv Mazor lecture on Minimal Invasive Surgery Utilizing Piezo Surgical Device - Optimizing Biological and Functional Outcome in the Posterior Maxilla.

Using products such as Piezotome® and Sinus Lift Kit as examples, he articulated that innovative technology minimises complications, reduces treatment and healing time, and ultimately enhances function.

Improve patient understanding and encourage them to look after themselves by giving them the tools and the knowledge: together we can improve patient care.

Occlusion management panel - At the 12th BACD Annual Conference

Occlusion management panel

Delegates at this year’s BACD Annual Conference will be treated to a diverse range of exceptional educational opportunities.

Among these, and promising to be one of the event’s highlights, is the occlusion management panel, hosted by Dr Ken Harris, Dr Ian Buckle, Dr Heike Krämer, Dr Any Toy and Dr Chris Orr. “I’m looking forward to a vigorous and forthright exchange of ideas,” says Dr Harris. “Delegates will be encouraged to offer their own insights, as well as being exposed to ours.

“Occlusion plays an important role in the success of our restorative dentistry and, as the population ages, it is incumbent on today’s dental practitioners to be able to restore these gradually failing dentitions so patients can retain their own teeth.”

A long-standing fellow of the BACD and the first UK graduate of the Kois Center in Seattle, Dr Harris is known for his knowledge of the Kois approach to occlusion, one of the most popular trends in modern occlusal theory and thought – and will be bringing his considerable expertise to bear during the session.

Join delegates from all across the country for this inspirational three-day event – make sure you register your place today!

Looking forward to the BACD Annual Conference 2015

Looking forward to the BACD Annual Conference 2015

Learning from the best

As soon as one begins their training to become a dental professional, they understand this will never really have an end point during their career.  The natural skills involved in being a dentist have to be accompanied by continual education and ongoing learning to ensure that new techniques and materials are kept abreast off, resulting in the optimum care provided to patients.

Additionally, patients are becoming more aware of the treatment options available to them and consequently more demanding of the results that they receive. They know that they can choose which dentist to go to depending on the treatment that they require, and often carry out extensive research to ensure that they choose the best. There are a number of ways to differentiate yourself from the other practice down the road; one of which includes subscribing to a specialist academy. By marketing this membership to your existing and potential patients, you are showing your commitment to your education, an outstanding quality of service provision and the dedication that your patients are looking for.

Your time is valuable – choose wisely

They say nothing beats face-to-face interaction and this is most certainly true when it comes to education. The academy that you choose to join will depend on the education avenues available from them, so you need to ensure that you select the one that suits your learning needs the most. However, the choice of academies to join and their educational conferences to attend is vast and confusing. Your time is very valuable, to both you and your patients, so it is important to choose wisely.

A worthwhile academy should offer the latest in education, career support, assistance to find more patients and value for money. The larger academies in the industry will hold an annual conference that should be a high point of your yearly membership.  The most prestigious conferences offer internationally recognised experts in their field, meaning you can remain close to home, but find out about techniques and developments from all around the world. You usually watch a series of lectures and participate in hands-on workshops on a range of topics by highly regarded opinion leaders and there is the opportunity to ask questions and get answers from the experts.

It’s not what you know, but who you know

Another important aspect of attending the most high profile of annual conferences is networking. At these events you can meet old and current acquaintances and catch-up on their most recent news. But, you also get to the chance to meet new peers and opinion leaders that have similar professional interests to you and can become an important mentor within your career.

It is only at some of the better conferences that you can get access to the speakers on a one-to-one basis. This allows you to seek valuable career advice from them, clinical case counsel, get suggestions on specialist courses to attend and hear their experiences with particular products and materials. This is most definitely valuable time well spent!

The most talked about conference of the year!

The most influential conference in the aesthetic dentistry calendar is no doubt the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry’s (BACD) Annual Conference in November. As always, the 2015 event it is expected to be one of the most talked about conferences of the year! For the last 12 years, the BACD has staged professional educational conferences that have attracted the most eminent of dental professionals offering their insights into their specialist topics.

This year the conference is titled, ‘The Aesthetic Equilibrium’ and it seeks to achieve harmony between biology, science, technical aspects, aesthetics and mechanics, as well as balancing the patient’s emotional, financial and clinical needs. By using the finest national and international speakers, the BACD hopes the topics will inspire you and offer an insight on how to achieve this balance. The speakers are also very approachable and will be happy to offer advice and recommendations; a trait thought to be quite unique to this particular conference.

Further still, there will be trade representatives present to provide demonstrations and advice on the latest equipment and materials, as well as offering special offers and prices. There is something for everyone at the BACD Annual Conference, so bring along other team members to optimise the opportunity; there will be something for everyone.

The BACD’s 12th Annual Conference runs from 12th - 14th November 2015 at The Hilton London Metropole Hotel. Go to www.bacd.com, email Suzy Rowlands at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or call 0207 612 4166.

The Dental Technology Showcase (DTS) Returns

The Dental Technology Showcase (DTS) Returns

The Dental Technology Showcase (DTS) is well established as the event of the year for dental technicians, clinical dental technicians and lab owners. The 2015 show welcomed more than 1,500 professionals through the door and so it remains the best-attended event in the UK, with 84% of delegates rating the show as excellent or good[1].

Highlights of 2015

  • 95% of delegates discovered new products and services and / or suppliers among the extensive exhibition.
  • 47% of delegates made purchases while at the show.
  • More than half of those in attendance were interested in CAD/CAM solutions.

New for 2015, the CAD/CAM Theatre proved highly popular, with leading experts presenting inspirational cases, fresh ideas and cutting-edge technologies. Also introduced for the first time was Launchpad UK, introducing the latest products, materials and equipment on the UK market following global launches at IDS 2015 only a few months previous.

Further highlights of the event included the Association of Dental Implantology’s (ADI) Implant Theatre and copious networking and socialising opportunities. The Lecture Theatre also hosted a selection of world-class speakers, plus there were opportunities to witness live demonstrations in the Practical Theatre and then get hands-on with new materials in the workshops.

What’s New for 2016?

As the Dental Laboratories Association’s flagship event, DTS has long received support from various leading dental organisations and societies. In 2016, we are delighted to welcome two brand new educational features run in conjunction with the Orthodontic Technologists Association (OTA) and the British Association of Clinical Dental Technology (BACDT).

Orthodontic Technician’s Seminar Stream – Supported by the OTA

This brand new seminar stream will offer a combination of exciting lectures and workshops suitable for both experienced orthodontic technicians and those who work in other fields and are interested in finding out more. A range of topics will be discussed from cleft lip and palate care to multi-stranded wire retainers and positioning stent, orthodontic technology materials and poly(methyl methacrylate)- free appliances. Sessions will also be run by top names in the field, including:

  • James Green, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust
  • Andrea Johnson, Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
  • Paul Mallett, University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust
  • Rye Mattick, Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
  • Edward Mapley, Cardiff Metropolitan University
  • Daniel Shaw, Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Paul Mallett, OTA Chairman, comments:

“The OTA is happy to be contributing to the educational programme at DTS 2016, where we will be presenting highly informative and relevant sessions for delegates to enjoy. DTS has been a great event in previous years, giving us, as the representative association for orthodontic technicians here in the UK, a valuable opportunity to engage with our fellow technicians and to continue to work as an education partner with DTS. We look forward to connecting with more orthodontic technicians during the next event.”

National CDT Conference – in partnership with the BACDT

Providing headline speakers, verifiable CPD and a professional trade show, the BACDT Annual Conference has always been a great event. By partnering with DTS 2016, the experience will be taken to a whole new level for all those in attendance. The conference will be open to all clinical dental technicians and dental professionals with an interest in the spectrum of topics explored.

Alan Forest, Director for Membership at the BACDT, says:

“DTS, co-located with The Dentistry Show, is the perfect venue to hold the BACDT Conference due to the mix of high profile speakers, great trade turn out and great networking opportunities.”

Don’t miss out

All the favouriteswill also return for 2016 including the CAD/CAM Theatre, ADI Implant Theatre and an array of stimulating lectures, live demonstrations and hands-on workshops. BACD regional meetings educate and inspire

BACD regional meetings educate and inspire

'I would recommend any dental professional attend BACD's regional meetings,' says Max Atkinson, a technician at Maxim Dental Studio.

Max attended 'The Full Arch Implant Bridge - Immediate Placement, Loading and Aesthetics,' presented in Belfast by impassioned cosmetic dentist, Dr Douglas Lee.

Dr Lee's objectives were to help delegates understand pre-prosthetic planning: the short-term goals, long-term considerations and treatment steps. Delivering the kind of high-quality learning and discussion that had become synonymous with the BACD, the overriding message was that brilliant, beautiful results are achievable by anyone and therefore accessible to all.

The BACD runs a programme of year-round meetings and events all over the UK. You will not need to travel far to hear from some of the most renowned clinicians in the industry, talking on relevant issues for forward-thinking cosmetic dentists. Stimulating, inspiring and a great opportunity to increase your professional network, BACD regional meetings offer verifiable CPD.

Innovation, Inspiration and Knowledge - Nobel Biocare Sponsored Sessions at EuroPerio8

Innovation, Inspiration and Knowledge Nobel Biocare

Innovation, inspiration and knowledge are key elements for the advancement and maintenance of a practitioner’s skills in dental implantology. At EuroPerio8, practitioners had the chance to hear from those at the very forefront of the profession in sessions sponsored by Nobel Biocare.

On Thursday, an outstanding line-up of leading speakers including Christer Dahlin, Iñaki Gamborena and Eric Rompen presented to a capacity crowd on ‘Hard and soft tissue parameters to support optimal aesthetics – innovative approach to materials and techniques’.

Dr Christer Dahil, Professor in Oral Surgery and Guided Tissue regeneration at the Department of Biomaerials Science, Institute for Clinical Sciences in Sweden, was the first to take to the podium. He explored the biological mechanisms that present challenges for the implant clinician, highlighting the importance of guided bone regeneration and discussing the various bone defect classifications.

Dr Iñaki Gamborena, Associate Professor at the University of Washington Dental School, was keen to highlight the importance of the soft tissue, encouraging minimally invasive techniques by exposing as little bone as possible during procedures. Favouring a graftless approach, he considered the benefits of healing abutments to improve the condition of the soft tissue before conventional abutments are placed.

Finally, Professor and Head of the Department of Periodontology / Dental Surgery at the University of Liège in Belgium, Dr Eric Rompen looked further at the interface between the soft tissue and implant. Discussing the properties and clinical evidence supporting biocompatible materials, he used case studies to demonstrate the adhesion process and warn how easily detachable the soft tissue is even when using these materials.

Throughout the inspirational session, cutting-edge products from Nobel Biocare were described which are designed specifically to enhance the clinical outcome of implant treatment. These included the Angulated Screw Channel (ASC) abutment, increasing workflow flexibility and access; PEEK healing abutments, optimising the emergence profile; and the new NobelActive® Wide Platform and NobelParellel® Conical Connection implant systems, ideal for the posterior region.

Nobel Biocare also sponsored a session on the Friday, with leading international clinicians Chadur Wadhwani, Stefan Holst and Eric Rompen once again. Entitled ‘Multi-causality of peri-implanitis – Give the bone the chance to survive’, this session explored aetiology of complex chronic infections like peri-implantitis and demonstrated factors that can facilitate bone healing.

BSDHT: decidedly European!

BSDHT-decidedly-European.jpg

Europerio8 was attended by 9400 delegates and the BSDHT was honoured to be co-hosting this prestigious event. The official opening ceremony was an opportunity for the 29 member  societies to come together and celebrate the start of an exciting and innovating three days of research, dialogue and discussion held in London for the first time.

These congresses, held every three years, aim to implement the EFP vision of "Periodontal health for a better life". BSDHT President Michaela ONeill, addressing delegates from the stage said:

"On behalf of the British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy, I would like to thank the European Federation of Periodontology and the British Society of Periodontology for what promises to be a very stimulating and productive few days.

My role, and the role of my fellow dental hygienists and therapists, is one part of a vast chain of dentistry that leads to good oral health.

We’re constantly trying to translate our research into patient friendly messages.

The recent results of the European Workshop in Periodontology have focussed new light on how we thought we should educate our patients – especially as it included what looks now like a one hundred and eighty degree turn in the new recommendation for interdental brushing rather than flossing.

But beyond conference, and indeed academia, it is crucial that we are "people facing"   and that we can filter the messages of a major conference like this directly to our clinical staff: they are the gatekeepers who will present your messages direct to our patients.

And on behalf of the BSDHT, we are proud that the importance of our role within periodontology is being reflected at EuroPerio 8."

Technology and education: Improving patient care - Dr Amit Patel and Donna Schembri

Technology and education: Improving patient care

Speaking at EuroPerio8 on Thursday June 4th, Dr Amit Patel and Donna Schembri explored the concept of ‘Seeing the Unseen’ - Utilising Fluorescent Technology for Optimal Periodontal Care.

With the two speakers covering the subjects of diagnosis, communication and the treatment of periodontal disease and peri-implantitis, the message was clear: innovation changes products and progress changes behaviours.

Studies have shown that 40 - 80% of information is forgotten immediately by patients[i]. Donna therefore noted that if you want your patients to be better informed about periodontal disease, you need to find better ways to enhance their understanding. By replacing dental jargon with emotive wording and replacing negative and daunting connotations of treatment with positivity, this has the potential to empower and motivate your patients - increasing your chance of success and improving overall patient care.

With comfort and increased effectiveness at the forefront of innovation, Donna and Amit firmly believe that by using the right technology and products you can minimise the presence of plaque on teeth and dental implants: achieving the ultimate goal of tooth loss prevention.

Using photos and videos for examples, the fluorescence protocol was put to the test with demonstrations of how pioneering products can be utilised to treat and maintain periodontal disease effectively. Both speakers also highlighted the need for

continued focus on educating patients about the differences between supragingival cleaning, subgingival cleaning, root planning, use of medication and x-ray and follow up treatment. They need to be informed of the benefits of prophylaxis as well; those being tartar removal, aesthetics and fresher breath.

Examples of cutting-edge products mentioned included Acteon’s Newtron P5xs ultrasonic generator, the Air n Go easy airpolisher and the Soprocare - which utilises state of the art photonics technologies. With products like these, patients can reap the benefits of accurate detection, quick visual follow up, comfort, oral hygiene education and complete removal of plaque and stains with minimally invasive treatment.

As the question and answering session post lecture depicted, the main concerns highlighted among professionals included patient’s lack of understanding. “It is a relationship,” Dr Amit Patel explained, “Give them the tools to do it themselves and lead them in the right direction.”

It would seem then that the answer to better patient care is twofold: improve patient understanding and rapport to empower patients to look after themselves and utilise technology to see better and treat faster.

On Saturday June 6th, Ziv Mazor examined the concept of Minimal Invasive Surgery Utilizing Piezo Surgical Device - Optimizing Biological and Functional Outcome in the Posterior Maxilla, once again sponsored by Acteon.

In order to explore invasive surgery, Mazor first identified potential obstacles that can occur during treatment.

He noted that implant placement in the atrophic posterior maxilla often causes complications due to the quality and volume of the bone that is available. With the height and width of the residual ridge being affected by post-extraction resorption patterns, physical trauma, periodontal disease and pneumatisation of the sinus, he highlighted that longer and wider implants are needed to enhance long-term survival.

Research points towards infected sockets being the most common cause of post-extraction complications, with a study showing a percentage of 48.7. Bleeding sockets came second with 41% and retained roots caused 10.3% of problems[ii].

Recent innovation in this area highlights that trauma to the tissues and the underling bone can be eliminated, minimising both the procedure time and post-operative complications.

With sinus lifts and osteotome techniques often being associated with higher morbidity rates and complication risks, technological advances are a revelation in achieving a reduced risk and high standard of patient care.

Mazor went on to suggest that with the use of reliable, powerful and simple products such as Piezotome® ultrasonic surgery unit from Acteon, there are fewer complications and emphasis can be instead placed on the application of autologous growth factors. By utilising the sinus lift balloon technique, patients can also benefit from the reduction of risk to damage of the Schneiderian membrane. An example of this product is the Sinus Lift Kit by Acteon, which offers the practitioner a straightforward and safe answer to the sinus lift operation.

The point of this lecture was clear: in reducing complications with the aid of innovative technology, ultimate function of patient dentition can be reached in a shorter time period and risk-free way.

Thus there is a noticeable change in the direction of periodontology. The products that are being developed are innovative and effective not just because of what they can do for professionals, but also for how they engage and empower the patient.

PerioChip® delight at EuroPerio 8

PerioChip delight at EuroPerio 8

Proud partner of the British Society of Periodontology (BSP), PerioChip® was among the Gold Sponsors of EuroPerio 8 and delighted delegates with an array of first class speakers and educational content.

Prior to the exhibition, the professional team looked forward to extolling the advantages of PerioChip®. EuroPerio 8 was a fantastic place for PerioChip® to raise awareness amongst the dental community about gum disease and its potential links to systemic illnesses such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The speakers taking to the stage at the show included: Professor Eli Machtei, Professor Arie J Van Winkelhoff and Dr Rajan Nansi.

Professor Machtei of the Rambam School of Dentistry in Israel is Clinical Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine at the Technion (Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, Israel). His session, Guided Tissue Regeneration: When to use it, focused on periodontal regeneration and looked at how far the profession has progressed and what future research is needed in order to improve our clinical outcomes. He asked what the limitations are, and where should dentists complete or refrain from completing guided tissue regeneration.

Professor Arie J Van Winklehoff of the University of Groningen in the Netherlands is Co-owner of Laboral Diagnostics en Laboral International, a service in the field of clinical microbiology for dental professionals. His session, When should we use systemic antimicrobials? discussed the rationale behind using these drugs in treating periodontitis. It considered the recent World Health Organisation recommendations surrounding the over-prescription of antimicrobial medicines and encouraged a more evidence-based approach to the prescription of antibiotics for periodontitis.

Dr Rajan Nansi, Chair of Early Careers Group, BSP UK also spoke at the event and his session, Management of periodontitis in practice: Practical concepts, aimed to discuss the effectiveness of non-surgical periodontal therapy and explore the use of adjunctive locally applied antimicrobials in periodontal treatment.

Delegates at EuroPerio 8 could see that PerioChip® is passionate about supporting, educating and communicating with the dental community to highlight the importance of keeping gums healthy, and treating gum disease effectively without the risk associated with using antibiotics.

This is where the advantages of this wafer thin biodegradable insert really come into their own. By using PerioChip® you can ensure that harmful bacteria are eliminated for up to 10 days[i] and, for on-going therapy, PerioChip® suppresses the growth of bacterial flora in the treated site for up to 11 weeks, giving the all-important time needed for gum reattachment and stabilisation of the periodontium[ii].

The UK Dental Calendar has arrived!

The UK Dental Calendar has arrived!

GDPUK Launches UK Dental Calendar

At the beginning of the year, we launched a new feature on the GDPUK Site. This feature is the “Dental Calendar”. The Dental Calendar will be a central area for everyone from the dental profession to know what is taking place in the world of UK Dentistry.

As long as you are signed into the site, anyone from the profession can add events, seminars, training and exhibitions to the Event List. We believe this is an exciting addition to the dental landscape. Firstly it is a great way of promoting an event and secondly it makes the profession aware of events taking place close to them or that there is a specific course taking place, that potentially they would not have been aware of.  We hope it can become a really handy resource for the dental community.

How to use?

Once logged into the site, the dental calendar tab drops down to offer the option of “adding an event” as the image below demonstrates.

Once the tab is clicked you can then add the event by following the form, which is easy to use and should only take a matter of minutes. Pictures, the date and location are simple to enter. Once added the event is then added to the event list and can be viewed by the whole dental community.

Currently events can be shared on Twitter and Google plus, which means that you can publicise the event to the wider dental world.

Going forward we will also use the twitter handle of @DentalCalendar to publicise when something is added to the calendar. Please get following!

Future Use?

The calendar will take some time to become established and used widely. Once it is used regularly, we envisage the calendar being used in a number of ways.

  • Featured events – for a small fee, organisations could feature their event on the calendar and ensure it gets maximum exposure.
  • Ticket Sales – Places on courses could be booked and paid for on the GDPUK Site. GDPUK would act as a ticket agent and help an organisation with the sales of the tickets to a particular event.
  • Specific Banner Adverts – There is an opportunity for a dental organisation to sponsor / associate their business with the calendar. To discuss the opportunity further please get in contact with This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
  • For the upcoming Contract Reform Roadshow in Manchester on the 30th Jan, the dentists attending have been registering through the GDPUK Site. This has so far attracted a few hundred registrations, a figure that is continually rising. More information can be found here about the roadshow. Feel free to register.

Thanks for reading about the dental calendar. We hope you enjoy using the calendar. If you have any feedback about the calendar or have any further questions. Please get in touch. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
