A report from the National Audit Office has revealed 30% of healthcare fines issued since 2014 – 1.7 million notices, with a cash value of £188 million – were withdrawn because a valid exemption was confirmed to be in place following a challenge. The BDA has welcomed calls for clarity on NHS penalty charges and says it has hit innocent NHS patients.

The GDC is seeking views on its consultation on our strategy for 2020-22 ’Working with the dental team for public safety and confidence’’. working with the dental team for public safety and confidence’, its strategy for 2020-2022. In his foreword, chair Bill Moyes says that the overall decrease in GDC expenditure points to a significant reduction in the dentist ARF, and a small increase to the DCP ARF.

In her last public engagement before leaving office as BDA President, Dr Susie Sanderson gave a presentation at an event organised by the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Dentistry and Oral Health and co-hosted by the APPGs on Pharmacy and Antibiotics. It gave members of Parliament and Peers a chance to question a panel of experts in antimicrobial resistance across the main fields of primary care.

BDA Northern Ireland has written formally to accept the Department of Health’s GDP pay uplift offer for 2018/19. It will see the DDRB recommendation of 2% net of expenses being applied, equating to an actual uplift of 2.73% backdated to 1st April 2018. According to Department of Health, this represents a total investment of £2.9 million in regional dental services.

At the BDA AGM, held in London on May 2, Dr Russ Ladwa was elected BDA President for 2020/21. He has been a member of the BDA’s PEC since 2012 and has chaired its Health and Science Committee since 2015. A GDP in London and with a distinguished career in the profession, he was FGDP Dean from 2009-12 and was a postgraduate tutor with the London Deanery for 23 years.

A year before the new NHS contract is rolled out, a survey is being launched by Practice Plan to ask dentists for their thoughts. The Dentistry Confidence Monitor survey asks about both NHS and private dentists’ knowledge about the contract to be introduced from April 2020, how well they feel it will work for different groups and how it may impact profitability, workload and goodwill. Leeds has shown the way in reducing childhood obesity by 6.4% over recent years. But a new nationally representative UK survey of children (aged 4-10 years old) has found no strong/direct link between drinking sugar sweetened beverages and greater energy consumption or higher BMI. Both claims were made at the recent European Congress on Obesity.

The force behind British Dental Association’s presence in Northern Ireland, and former Chair of both NI and UK Councils, Roz McMullan has been installed as BDA President. She was consultant orthodontist from 1991 until her retirement in 2016. She said: “I am passionate about making a difference to the wellbeing of my chosen profession, and it’s my honour to continue doing that as President.”
