A woman who offered illegal teeth whitening at a Sunderland beauty salon has been fined more than £9,500. GDC investigators were offered whitening by Lynsey Wilson at the Guys and Dolls salon in High Street West, Sunderland. They launched an investigation into the salon after receiving a number of complaints, Magistrates heard.

The BDA has criticised Minister for failing to act over child tooth decay, as new data from NHS Digital shows 4.9 million children didn’t attend a dentist last year. Henrik Overgaard-Nielsen, GDPC chair, said: “Any government that claims to value prevention should not be letting nearly 5 million children miss out on free check-ups.” This follows last week’s call by MPs for Matt Hancock to act over dental access problems.

Tim Farron MP, former leader of the Lib Dems, has told his local paper, The Westmorland Gazette, that moves to channel more NHS resources to ease the area’s dental crisis have not solved the problem. He said the crisis was now deepening after it emerged that an offer of increased resources for NHS dental practices to expand and take in more patients had not had a single taker.

Dental charity warns over new telephone scam

The Oral Health Foundation is issuing advice for people calling its Dental Helpline service following an online telephone scam that tricks victims into being charged premium rates. The scam features a series of bogus telephone numbers that forward people to the Dental Helpline. While connected, fraudsters are then able to hit callers with highly-inflated charges.

Commenting on a study in BDJ, which warned that sodium chlorite, the active ingredient found in three over-the-counter products could cause damage, BDA’s scientific adviser, Professor Damien Walmsley, said: “At best, people may be wasting their money buying over the counter and online products to whiten teeth.”

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has sought views about indemnity cover for dentists and other healthcare professionals who are not covered by any existing or proposed state-backed scheme, via an open consultation Appropriate clinical negligence cover which closed on 28 February. Three indemnity providers have responded.

Oscar winner’s fake teeth were ‘made in Britain’

Rami Malek, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in "Bohemian Rhapsody," had fake teeth for the role made by dental technician, Chris Lyons, of British-based Fangs FX. They were described by the New York Post as ‘the real stars’ of the film.

Campaign starts to save dogs facing death in dental study

Tens of thousands of people have joined a campaign to save six labradors from being put down at the end of a medical trial in a Swedish laboratory. The dogs have had a third of their teeth removed and replaced with human dental implants at Gothenburg University. A protest has been held outside the university and a petition with more than 80,000 signatures has been handed in.
