As a general dentist, I have found using advanced implant planning software such as coDiagnostiX™ to be very beneficial and I have been using it fully for about a year now. I don't have a CT scanner in-house (it would be difficult for me to justify the costs as a mixed practice), so we refer our patients to a local scan centre and they send us an open file scan that we can place into the software. Once in the coDiagnostiXTM system we can take the various measurements and assess the best placement for the implant.

coDiagnostiXTM is an investment in terms of direct cost and time to gain the depth of knowledge to fully utilise all the elements and tools in the system. However, I firmly believe it improves the patient journey, delivers a more efficient surgery process, reduces stress, and ultimately delivers better dentistry.

A red-hot success for the Ice White Charity Xmas Party

Dr Nilesh R. Parmar’s ever-popular Ice White Charity Xmas Party came back with a twist in December, when over 300 guests arrived in RED at the Mint Leaf Lounge in Bank, London, to raise over £7,000 for the Children’s Trust!

Now in its third year, this spectacular event was a complete sell-out and guests from the dental profession were treated to live entertainment from BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra DJ Marcel Lawson, whilst sipping champagne, enjoying the fun-filled photo-booth and admiring the impressive dental implant ice sculpture courtesy of sponsors Straumann UK.

Thanks to kind donations from Henry Schein Dental, Shen Products and BDS Laboratories to name just a few, the charity raffle featured must-have prizes including a corporate box at the New Year’s Day Tottenham vs. Chelsea match, an Apple iPad Mini, personal training session with Musclemania World Pro Ulisses Jr. and a sensual Spa Day.

Straumann go the extra mile for charity - again!

Following on from the success of last year’s incredible fundraising event, Straumann UK are proud to announce the second intercontinental Straumann Charity Bike Ride.

Commencing on Tuesday 2nd September from Milan, Italy the ride will finish at Straumann Headquarters in Basel, Switzerland on Saturday 6th September. Headed by Managing Director, Stephen Booth and consisting of several members of the Straumann UK team, alongside some very loyal customers, the group will be taking in the cultural sights of Austria, Liechtenstein and Germany during the 5-day journey.

With the Charity Bike Ride including one of the most iconic routes through the Stelvio Pass - 2757m (9045 feet), our dedicated cyclists will be travelling on the highest paved mountain pass in the Eastern Alps, and the second highest in the Alps, which is a definitive test of mental and physical strength and endurance!

The goal is for each person taking part to raise a minimum of £1000 in sponsorship money and Straumann are ultimately aiming to raise over £30,000 for the chosen charities, Bridge2Aid and the Cleft Lip and Palate Association (CLAPA).

ICE WHITE PARTY RAISES OVER £2,000 FOR CHARITY

 

Dr Nilesh R. Parmar’s much anticipated Ice White Charity Xmas Party made a welcome return in December, enticing over 300 guests on board HMS President and raising over  £2,000 for this year’s chosen charity, Operation Christmas Child (OCC).

 

Nilesh commented, “I am thrilled with the success of Ice White 2013 and the incredible amount we have raised for OCC. I’m also extremely thankful for all those who returned for a second year of celebrations and of course welcome new friends. I look forward to seeing you all again next year.”

 

OCC is the world’s largest children’s Christmas project, run by the charity ‘Samaritan’s Purse’; sending gift-filled shoeboxes around the world to underprivileged children. All funds raised at the charity event will go towards OCC shipping costs to help children in more than 150 countries experience the true joy of Christmas.

The lavish event wowed guests not only with its fantastic location but with live entertainment, the fun-filled photo-booth and of course the dental handpiece shaped ice sculpture. Guests were invited to contribute to the charity raffle, which saw lucky individuals win a Samsung Galaxy S4, a trip for two to La Toque, France and £100 shopping vouchers to name just a few. Celebrations carried on well into the early hours of the morning at the new members club Carriage 34, in Waterloo.

Helen made the final shortlist of seven candidates, who were then subject to a rigorous interview by a panel of six judges, chaired by Lord Digby Jones, former Director General of the CBI. The winner was announced at an awards luncheon, held in Birmingham in October and hosted by the inspirational Dame Kelly Holmes.

Helen’s nomination for the Vitalise Awards was made by a Regional Director of the CBI, and came as a complete surprise to her: “I am very proud to have been in the company of some outstanding candidates, during what has been a very interesting and worthwhile journey. Burmaball – “great success”!

 

On the 12th October, guests gathered at the exclusive “Eight” private members club in the City for the inaugural Burmaball. The ball, which organisers hope will become an annual fundraising event, was organised in aid of Burmadent, the dental charity set up to help dental volunteers provide care to the people of Burma.

The ‘Burmaball’ has been 10 months in the planning, ever since dentist Henrik Overgaard-Nielsen and his wife Sharon Bierer returned from their first trip, during which they provided dental care to 1200 orphans and local people in the area of Lake Inle.

During this trip, Henrik and Sharon, who were accompanied by Lesley Naismith, support manager at Software of Excellence, had the idea for the Burmaball and on their return they enlisted the help of fellow Charity trustee Brian Weatherly (President, Software of Excellence).

10 months later, with 140 guests and a long waiting list for tickets, Sharon feels the effort has all been worthwhile. “Our aim was to raise awareness of the charity and its aims. We were also keen to raise enough money to cover the cost of a mobile unit, which will enable volunteers to bring desperately needed dentistry to the more remote tribal peoples.”

The black tie event was an eclectic mix of glamour and tradition, with Burmese dancers providing a traditional welcome for guest of honour Burmese Deputy Ambassador, Daw Ei Ei Tin and Syed Kamall, the MEP for London and Master of Ceremonies. Games, an auction and a raffle, featuring some amazing prizes such as holidays in Portugal and Italy, helped to keep the donations flowing and following a sumptuous south east Asian dinner, the evening concluded with dancing until the small hours, to music provided by Brian Weatherly’s band ‘The Viceroys’ and a professional DJ.

There are three separate trips already booked up until December, Burmadent is growing into a successful and influential dental charity. The Burmaball will only help in disseminating this message throughout the profession.

Over twenty representatives from DPAS put their best foot forward on 29 September when they took part in the 10km Mouth Cancer Awareness Walk 2013. The team included members from all departments, including the majority of the management team.

The event, now in its 8th year, saw Team DPAS join many other fundraisers for a 10km walk around Hyde Park in order to raise awareness of the symptoms of head and neck cancers. In total, over 600 people took part and Team DPAS managed to raise over £1,200, with donations still being received.

Sam Brice, Marketing Manager at DPAS, said: “Mouth Cancer kills one person every 3 hours in the UK because of late detection. The work that the Mouth Cancer Foundation is doing in terms of education about screening and public awareness of the symptoms is tremendous and such a high profile event can only help to create a better understanding of the disease. DPAS is proud to be associated with this organisation.”

A third of cosmetic treatments booked online!

Recent booking data analysis by Toothpick (toothpick.com) has identified that online appointment booking is fast-becoming a must-have service within the dental practice, revealing that half of all live bookings (50%) [i] made are done so outside of surgery hours (Mon-Fri, 9am – 5pm).

This ever-increasing statistic represents a dramatic shift in the way patients perceive dentistry and the options available to them, as their personal time is being spent researching cosmetic treatment and trawling practices for last-minute appointments whilst sitting in the comfort of their own home.

The analysis also uncovered that over a third of these bookings (37%) were made for cosmetic consultations. With around one in ten general dental practitioners now signed up with toothpick.com and the average practice offering cosmetic treatments, online appointment booking is proving to be an ideal platform to promote these services.

Mintel’s ‘Dentistry MBD 2013’[ii] recent report also supports these statistics, reporting significant growth in cosmetic dentistry over the last five years, increasing to £1.3 billion in 2013, and highlighting that there is likely to be as much as 21% growth in the next five years.  Such findings are further evidence that by opening your doors 24/7 with an online appointment booking system, your practice can generate additional revenue and become more profitable whilst working the same surgery hours.

Leading market research company predicts strong growth for dental sector

A report published last month by market research giant Mintel, forecasts strong growth across the industry in the coming 5 years and concludes that by 2018 UK dentistry will be worth £9bn, a 14% increase on its current value.

Leading dental marketing agency Manan Limited, who collected data from more than 600 dentists for their 2012 Dental Survey, shared their findings with Mintel, having been approached by industrial analyst and author of the report, Angus Handley. Manan’s data provided an insight into some key areas of the dental market, including dentists’ likelihood of increasing specialist service provision, the level of hygienist services currently available, and the profession’s adoption of new technology, such as online appointment booking.

The report gives detailed forecasts of how the next 5 years are likely to develop, particularly in the face of a new NHS contract, currently expected no earlier than 2016. Predicting slow growth in the private sector of only 2.5% (on a par with GDP forecasts) between 2014 and 2016, a more favourable economic climate and increased disposable income will lead to more patients accessing private care, causing a rapid increase in 2017 and 2018, resulting in an overall 5 year forecast of 14% growth, according to the report.

Similarly, cosmetic dentistry is also expected to benefit from the predicted change in the economic environment. The report concludes that once the financial barriers to cosmetic treatment are removed there is a healthy prediction of 21% growth over the next 5 years in this sector.

A race to help save lives

To help raise funds for the Mouth Cancer Screening Accreditation Scheme, DPAS Practice Consultant Louise Bone, is running in the Glasgow 10K Race this October.

Sponsored by practice-branded dental plan provider, DPAS, the Mouth Cancer Screening Accreditation Scheme is the Mouth Cancer Foundation’s new life-saving initiative which accredits dental practices that routinely screen for oral cancer using their ‘2 Minutes to Save a Life’ screening protocol and meet other specific criteria.

The Mouth Cancer Screening Accreditation Scheme also aims to improve outcomes for head and neck cancer sufferers in accordance with the BDA’s occasional paper for the early detection and prevention of oral cancer and NICE guidelines. In addition, it embraces recent CQC, Information Governance and Clinical Governance requirements, as well as responding to the GDC’s recommendation for continuous professional development for the management of oral cancer.

Explaining her reasons for taking part in the race, Louise said, “As a previous Specialist Dental Nurse in the Regional Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department at St John's Hospital, I worked very closely with patients who had head and neck cancer, so I have seen first hand the devastating impact that mouth cancer can have. This was one of the most rewarding jobs I've ever had, in fact I’m still in contact with some of my previous patients, so I am delighted to do anything I can to help this worthwhile charity bring greater awareness of the need for early detection of mouth cancer.”

Louise has never run a 10K race before, but is hoping to complete the course in less than 60 minutes. She is training hard and taking some time away from her main hobby of horse riding in order to take up this challenge.

ICDE 2013 BIGGER & BETTER

Ivoclar Vivadent’s ICDE 2nd anniversary celebrations were back bigger and better for 2013, as over 200 dental professionals congregated at their state-of-the-art Leicester based UK and Ireland Headquarters, for an action-packed couple of days.

Attracting a pleasant mix of clinicians and technicians alike, delegates benefited from seeing the return of the superb clinician/technician duo James Russell and Rob Lynock. Taking to the stage on both days, James and Rob’s infectious chemistry saw them present another series of attention-grabbing case studies on how, through close teamwork, the excellent combination of the clinicians and technicians skills can ensure patients are provided with highly aesthetic, natural restorations. A variety of techniques to make conventional approaches more predictable and aesthetic were also shown.

With hands-on demonstrations from leading experts such as Rob Storrar, Jurgen Seger and Rob Endicott, alongside business-focused presentations from Laura Horton and Ashley Latter, to name just a few, delegates were spoilt for choice when it came to choosing from the comprehensive programme of practical lectures and inspiring seminars.

June’s much-anticipated event more than lived up to its high expectations with its supply of first-class speakers, and Ivoclar Vivadent ensured birthday celebrations carried on well into the Friday night with a lively party of eating, drinking, dancing and entertainment from the ‘Abba’s Angels’ tribute band.

Export Achievement Award win

Dentisan’s parent company Quadralene, has been recognised for their recent significant increase in international sales, winning the Medilink East Midlands Export Achievement Award.

The increase has been driven largely by Quadralene’s expansion in healthcare markets and their products are now sold in 41 countries worldwide. In 2012, overseas sales increased by 70% and are forecast to rise by a further 50% this year.
