Lansley launches whistleblowing helpline

NHS and social care staff who have concerns about patient care can now access a new, free whistleblowing helpline from the 1 January, Health Secretary Andrew Lansley said. The free whistleblowing helpline is funded by the Government and is part of the Government’s drive to tackle poor practice. This is in addition to the introduction of a contractual duty to raise concerns, which will be enshrined in the new NHS Constitution.

GDPs awarded £160,000 in research grants

Two grants, worth a total of almost £160,000, have been awarded by the Shirley Glasstone Hughes Trust Fund for research projects that will examine the role of dentists' anxieties in clinical decision making and the impact of the choice of linings under amalgam fillings have on outcomes for patients. The winning projects were selected by an international panel of experts, following a comprehensive peer review process of all the applications received.

Four year dental courses illegal says EU

The General Dental Council (GDC) has informed UK dental schools of an EU requirement that dentists’ studies should total five years and that time spent during a first degree may not count towards the dental training programme. A decision is expected by the end of the year. In the meantime the GDC says those qualifying this summer will be put on the Register.

Dentists to pay more for pensions

The Department of Health today launched a consultation on proposed changes to the level of contributions made by NHS Pension Scheme members towards their pension. It aims to secure £2.8bn savings per year by 2014/15 through increasing pension contributions from those in the NHS by an average of 3.2%.

First students graduate from Peninsula

Forty seven student dentists have graduated from the Peninsula Dental School. They are the first graduating cohort from new dental school. The Dean, Professor Elizabeth Kay, sent her congratulations and said: “I wish them well in their careers and I am confident that, wherever the practise, their patients will benefit from their excellent clinical and interpersonal skills.”

Mobile dental service launched

A doorstep dental service has been launched in Worcestershire. The mobile dental unit, funded by NHS Worcestershire, was started in November 2010 and is now fully operational, serving nearly 50 care homes across the county. The specialised unit provides a full range of dental care, from cleaning teeth to root canal therapy.

Post-menopausal women at risk of losing teeth

New research forecasts that over one in four post-menopausal women are likely to suffer tooth loss over a five year period, and the risk increases to nearly 90 per cent if other risk factors are present, especially diabetes and if they smoke. The impact of the menopause may go some way to explain why women more often suffer from tooth loss, despite generally having better oral health than men.

BDA condemns end of seniority pay

Experienced dentists feel angry and let-down at news that an expected extension to the deadline for joining the seniority pay scheme may not be forthcoming, Dr John Milne, Chair of the BDA’s General Dental Practice Committee, has warned. The BDA has been informed at a very late stage of the process for putting an extension in place that legal difficulties may prevent that happening.

Teenager habits revealed

British Dental Health Foundation (BDHF) is calling for teenagers to improve their oral hygiene, after a recent study revealed adolescents who smoke are more likely to abandon the basics, such as brushing their teeth twice a day. On the other hand a Government survey showed that consumption of sugar and confectionary among most age groups is declining.
