All change at Department of Health

Not only does the Department of Health have a new secretary of state, Jeremy Hunt MP for South West Surrey, but the three other Commons ministers have been changed. They are LibDem Norman Lamb MP for North Norfolk, Tory Dr Dan Poulter MP for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich and Tory Anna Soubry, MP for Broxtowe. Only Earl Howe remains of the old team. Responsibilities have not yet been allocated.

 

Jeremy Hunt was elected as MP for South West Surrey in May 2005. In May 2010 he was appointed Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport. He was formerly Shadow Culture Secretary (2007-2010) and Shadow Minister for Disabled People (2005 – 2007). Before his election as an MP, Mr Hunt ran his own educational publishing business, Hotcourses. He also set up a charity to help AIDS orphans in Africa in which he continues to play an active role. Mr Hunt was educated at Oxford University.

 

He lives in Farnham and London with his wife, son and daughter. Note for political nerds: South West Surrey was the constituency of a previous Health Secretary, Virginia.

Norman Lamb has been MP for North Norfolk since 2001. In opposition he was the Lib Dem health spokesman for dentistry. In May 2010 he was appointed Assistant Government Whip, as well as Chief Parliamentary and Political Adviser and Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Leader of the Liberal Democrats and Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg. From March to December 2006, Norman was Chief of Staff for party leader Sir Menzies Campbell. In December 2006 he was appointed Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary. Norman has held various positions in the Liberal Democrat party. He was Lib Dem Deputy Spokesperson for International Development (2001-02), a Treasury spokesman (2002-03), PPS (Parliamentary Private Secretary) to Charles Kennedy (2003-05) and Shadow Trade and Industry Secretary (2005-06).Norman read law at the University of Leicester. He is married with two sons and lives in Norfolk.

Daniel Poulter, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, was elected MP for Central Suffolk and North Ipswich in May 2010, having previously worked as an NHS hospital doctor specialising primarily in obstetrics, gynaecology and women’s health. Dr Poulter continues to practice medicine as an NHS hospital doctor on a part-time basis.

Dr Poulter is a member of the Health Select Committee, Chair of the Parliamentary Group on Maternity, and an Officer of the Parliamentary group to improve global health. He has previously has helped to set up medical and lifestyle advice clinics for the homeless and people with drug and alcohol misuse problems. Outside of medicine, Dr Poulter was previously Deputy Leader of Reigate and Banstead Council (2008 -10). He gained a law degree at Bristol University and a medicine degree at King’s College London.

Anna Soubry, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, has been MP for Broxtowe since May 2010 and in November 2010 was appointed as parliamentary private secretary to Simon Burns at the Department of Health.

Anna has worked at Grampian TV in Aberdeen as a reporter and presenter on North Tonight and at Central TV as a reporter on Central News East. During her time at Central, Anna was the shop steward of the National Union of Journalists. Anna read Law at Birmingham University and went on to train as a barrister. She worked as a criminal barrister in Nottingham and practised until becoming an MP. Anna has two daughters.
