CHRE finds ‘significant weaknesses’ in GDC

The Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence (CHRE) has issued a damning report on the work of the General Dental Council (GDC) over the past year, especially in the area of Fitness to Practise. Its report says: “We are particularly concerned with the scale of improvements that are required around the GDC’s fitness to practise work.”

Showcase guide gives 3 hours verifiable CPD

At this year’s Showcase, members of the dental team will be able to gain 3 hours verifiable CPD for reading the Show Guide. There will be a total of five articles featuring in a special CPD section of the Guide covering clinical and business topics. The answers will need to be submitted online after the event. Achieving a 50 per cent pass mark provides 3 hours of Verifiable CPD.

Are swimming pools safe for the teeth?

Experts at the New York University College of Dentistry have issued a warning to users of backyard swimming pools. “The damage can be permanent”, said researcher Dr Leila Jahangiri, “improperly maintained pool chlorination in swimming pools can cause rapid and excessive erosion of dental enamel,"

GKT appoints new dean

Dr Dianne Rekow, Senior Vice Provost of Engineering and Technology at New York University (NYU) and Provost of Polytechnic Institute of NYU, has been appointed as the next Dean of the GKT Dental Institute, King’s College has announced. She will succeed Professor Nairn Wilson, who is due to retire at the end of this year, and will take up the position from 1 January 2012.

Pop star Ke$ha wears fans’ teeth

The pop star Keysha (aka Ke$ha) has taken to wearing a necklace made of her human teeth. It all started when a fan sent her a tooth, so she made it into a necklace then added a few of her own baby teeth. She now has a collection of around 500 of such ‘gifts’. Two of her recent albums were called ‘Animal’ and ‘Cannibal’.

Government announces start of pilots

The Government announced that 68 dental practices are now starting the new dental contract pilot studies. The trials will look at ways of increasing patient access and promoting preventative dental treatments like fluoride varnish. Health Secretary Andrew Lansley said: “It is vital that patients receive high quality dental care and we are committed to promoting good oral health and preventing dental decay, especially in children.”
The BDA said the dental pilots were a ‘positive step’.
