BDA Chief executive, Peter Ward, has written to all Branch Chairmen and Treasurers with proposals for them to return any surplus funds they had at the end of the last financial year (30.Sep.10) to the BDA centrally and to accept a 50% reduction in next year’s grants. GDPUK understands that the BDA’s Board of Directors (the Representative Body) were not informed of the letter nor of its contents. |

Dentists should have recently received their superannuation form SD86C for the year 2010-11. “If in the past you haven’t given any attention to this certificate, you certainly should nowâ€, says Johnny Minford, a chartered accountant and member of the National Association of Specialist Dental Accountants (NASDA). “Superannuation certificates could be positively dangerous,†he adds.

Statistics for dental commissioning for the quarter ending June 2011 have been released by the Department of Health. This shows that 89.0 million UDAs were commissioned as at 30th June. This represents a decrease of 52,000 (less than 0.1%) on the UDAs commissioned as at 31st March 2011.

The Care Quality Commission is taking steps to register practices that either missed the 1 April registration deadline or provided incomplete applications. Those operating before the deadline were invited to make a "transitional application". A small number of providers failed to do so and will be contacted from this week. |

Commissioning of NHS dental services is experiencing a turbulent period as it contends with structural change in the NHS, the launch of pilots for a new dental contract and pressures on funding. The BDA survey of PCTs reflects a shifting landscape for them, in which more than a quarter of those questioned said that their commissioning functions had merged with those of other PCTs.

Some 26,000 fewer children are now seen by an NHS dentist than in 2004/06, despite a rise in the overall number of people paying a visit, according to the latest report from the NHS Information Centre. Other findings include a rise in the use of fluoride varnish, exempts having more Band 3 treatments than charge payers and more female dentists working in the NHS.

An 81-year-old retired dentist, Eric Frazer, who completed an English degree at the Leeds Metropolitan University this summer, was presented with the Allan MacGregor Memorial Prize at the ceremony. He returns to his studies next month continuing with a Psychology and Society degree.
