Oral Health action groups a significant step forward says BDA

Two new ‘Oral Health Options’ action groups are to be established in Northern Ireland, focusing on child oral health and oral health of the elderly. While welcoming this initiative, the BDA says it will need to be accompanied by adequate investment and a commitment to address the needs of the dental workforce if it is to be successful, the dentists’ body warned.

TV watching linked to sugar consumption and rotten teeth in children

Children who watch over 90 minutes of television a day are more likely to eat sugar and suffer from tooth decay, according to the findings of a new study. The research discovered that these young people are a third more likely to eat sugary foods (33%) and significantly more likely to have decaying teeth (39%).

Dentist suspended following death of patient

A dentist has been suspended for a year by the GDC after a patient on anti-clotting medication died following extractions. Patient A bled to death hours after having five of her teeth removed on July 18, 2017 in London. She collapsed shortly after the second of two appointments scheduled within a week of each other to extract her upper teeth and replace them with dentures. Five teeth were extracted during each session.

Affairs of the heart and avoiding confusion – BSPD Conference

The known association between coronary heart disease (CHD) and risk of dental disease makes the care of children with congenital heart conditions a highly relevant topic for the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry’s (BSPD) annual conference. Hosting the 2019 conference in Birmingham, the Midlands branch chose the theme “Hearts and Minds”.

Help for NHS dentists is just a phone call away

All NHS doctors and dentists in England now have 24/7 access to confidential advice and support, the Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, has announced. More than 180,000 doctors and dentists can get confidential advice and support, in person or over the phone, if they’ve faced a stressful incident at work or feel they are struggling with their mental health.

GDPs to receive 2.42% rise – 7 months late

The BDA has been told that NHS GDPs in England will be paid a 2.42% uplift in their November pay run. The Department has confirmed that the rise for 2019/2020 will be backdated to April 2019. Eddie Crouch, Chair of the BDA’s Review Body Evidence Committee, said: “This much needed uplift should have been implemented in April, but dentists will only receive this in November.”
