One of Winchester’s largest companies has brought smiles back to the city’s homeless community by providing vital funds throughout 2020 for their dental care. Simplyhealth, owners of Denplan, has contributed funds for another year through its Local Community Impact Fund for a mobile dental bus - operated by the charity Dentaid.

As part of the festive season, the Oral Health Foundation is calling on dentists to help ‘Save A Smile’ this Christmas. The charity has provided education, help and support to thousands of people over the course of the year and is now asking for the dental profession to get behind their Save a Smile appeal. Chief Executive Nigel Carter, says your donations are vital if the charity is to continue helping the most vulnerable groups in society.

The United Kingdom’s recent decision to vaccinate boys and girls from HPV-cancers has inspired the formation of a European-wide group to put an end to the virus: the new ‘HPV Action Network’. The alliance has been formed by the European CanCer Organisation (ECCO) with the goal to end all cancers caused by HPV across Europe.

Brushing teeth frequently is linked with lower risks of atrial fibrillation and heart failure, according to a study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, a journal of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). Previous research suggests that poor oral hygiene leads to bacteria in the blood, causing inflammation in the body. Inflammation increases the risks of atrial fibrillation and heart failure.

The Telegraph reports that Sainsbury’s is putting sugary cereals on its top shelves in a new trial that experts hope will prevent children pestering their parents for popular snacks that have a high level of sugar or salt. Tesco is also taking part in the trial, though a spokesman said it had not moved any sugary cereals on to its top shelves.
In May 2019, the General Dental Council published a consultation on its proposed strategy for 2020-2022. It has now published the results of this consultation. The strategy described the organisation’s vision, values and strategic aims, and provided high-level information on the expenditure plans to support the achievement of those aims over the period.
