Dental professionals in the UK are voicing grave concerns that overseas dental surgeons are putting patients at risk, by practising in the UK without thorough checks being carried out to assess their practical skills and competency.

Northumberland county council has approved the next steps to extend the fluoridation of the water supply in the county. The plan is subject to approval from the Health Secretary and they also propose to hold a public consultation to run from May to August next year. The Community Water Fluoridation (CWF) network was closely involved, following a unanimous vote at the LDC Conference.

The latest Care Quality Commission (CQC) report, State of Care, gives dental practices an almost clean bill of health, with over 95% needing no action following an inspection, in such critical areas as safety, effectiveness, ‘caring’ and ‘responsive’. But the report says that increased demand for frontline NHS dental services has led to ‘challenges’ in accessing appointments.
Statistics obtained by the Scottish Liberal Democrats show waits of up to 125 weeks for inpatient oral and maxillofacial treatment in Scotland. This is set against the Scottish government’s 12-week target for surgery. “These new figures have shed light on the staggeringly long waits some patients face for important dental treatment,” said a spokesman.

To add to the Prime Minister’s woes over Brexit, more and more pressure is being put on Boris Johnson to reverse his antipathy to the sugar tax. Latest to join in were the outgoing Chief Medical Officer, Prof Dame Sally Davies, whose report published today calls for the extension of the current tax on sugary drinks in her final report, and NHS England head, Simon Stevens, who said that the sugar tax had shown positive results.
