Welsh AM condemns ‘Tizer Taliban’

The Welsh Government has been urged not to follow the lead of New York City and stop the sale of large soft drinks. Welsh Conservative AM Darren Millar urged policymakers not to follow their example. He said: “This amounts to nothing more than a Tizer Taliban and any suggestion of similar proposals in Wales should be rejected out of hand.”

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg plans to ban restaurants, delis and movie theatres selling sugary drinks in containers larger than those of a medium coffee in his effort to crack down on obesity. He said: “New York City is not about wringing your hands; it’s about doing something. “I have long called for the Welsh Labour Government to invest in further education on healthy eating and healthy lifestyles in order to tackle Wales' spiralling obesity problem head-on. Ministers need to ensure that the right information is presented to children at as early an age as possible.”

But Professor Damien Walmsley, scientific adviser to the British Dental Association was adamant that sugary drinks are a health risk. He said: “Sugary food and drinks causes decay, while acidic products can cause erosion. Products such as fizzy drinks that are both high in sugar and acidic can be particularly harmful.”

A Welsh Government spokesman said: "While we note with interest the proposals being made by New York City, in Wales we are working on tackling obesity and providing advice on healthy eating and drinking. Our Change4Life programme promotes swapping fizzy drinks for healthier alternatives – and not just cutting quantities.”
