Research has been done comparing how patients value and respond to information on risk given in three different forms during dental check-ups. The PREFER randomised controlled trial has been published. It aims to compare patient preference for, and subsequent change in, oral health behaviour for three forms of risk information given at dental check-ups.

Three years after the Northern Ireland government collapsed in 2017, the parties have agreed to form a new coalition, headed by First Minister, Arlene Foster (DUP) and Sinn Fein’s Michelle O’Neill. The new Health Minister is the Ulster Unionist Party’s Robin Swann MLA, who until recently headed his party.

The dental community must act to prevent burnout amongst dentists so they stay in practice rather than quit the profession, according to Dental Protection. In a new report it says burnout creates problems not just for the dentist involved but can impact patients and the wider dental team. Raj Rattan, Dental Director, said: “When I talk to dentists throughout UK, it is clear that morale is low, and well-being issues are rising up the professional agenda.”

A 41-year-old Cornish firefighter who attempted to dislodge a piece of popcorn stuck in his teeth using various objects claims he later developed a life-threatening infection that required him to undergo open heart surgery. Adam Martin said he noticed the piece of popcorn stuck in a back tooth after he and his wife watched a film in September. For three days, he was unable to remove it.

A Maidstone dental technician was found with £1 million worth of drugs stashed in two Bag for Life containers at his work premises. Andrew Mackie, 53, was arrested after drugs squad officers raided Precision Chrome Castings in East Farleigh. He was jailed for eight years and four months following a spectacular fall from grace after he began "hob-nobbing" with dealers who supplied his need for cocaine.

The Manchester Evening News has reported that police have launched an investigation after a ’premeditated arson attack’ on a pair of dental labs in Farnworth, Greater Manchester. They have discovered CCTV footage of two men, who they believe to have started the blaze, entering the rear of the building and there was a large explosion soon after.
