Dentist suspended for using counterfeit dental equipment

The recent GDC Fitness to Practise hearing concerning a dentist’s purchase and use of counterfeit dental devices has highlighted the dangers to both patient and professional registration from using counterfeit and non-compliant devices. The GDC’s Professional Conduct Committee determined that the dentist’s registration should be suspended for a period of 3 months.

Young Glasgow dentist found dead by police

The body of dentist Jamie Newlands, 39 was discovered by police in countryside surrounding his home town of Glasgow. His family had raised the alarm on Friday evening after he failed to return home. He lived in the city’s Newlands area with his wife Amy and baby daughter. The cause of his death is not yet known.

Don-t take full course of antibiotics, GPs told

According to an article in the BMJ doctors have been advised to stop telling patients to finish the full course of antibiotics as that is driving up antimicrobial resistance. “The antibiotic course has had its day,” argues Martin Llewelyn and colleagues. But Prof Dame Sally Davies, the Chief Medical Officer, said the public message should remain unchanged until there was further research.

New members appointed to GDC

The GDC has announced the names of six new members of the Council, of which four are lay and two registrant. The appointments have been confirmed by the Privy Council. The new Council members take up their posts on 1 October. The GDC has thanked outgoing Council members - Alan MacDonald, David Smith, Jayendra Patel, Neil Stevenson and Rosemary Carter.

Dentists and MPs meet at Westminster

The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Dentistry and Oral Health – a forum for Parliamentarians interested in oral health to meet the profession - held an event in Parliament recently. Visitors included numerous MPs, Lords, and senior stakeholders such as the Chief Dental Officer Sara Hurley and the Director of Health and Social Care at NICE Prof Gillian Leng.

Fine and Criminal Behaviour Order given for illegal tooth whitening

A former dental technician has been ordered to pay more than £10,000 after being convicted of offering tooth whitening illegally. Jeffrey Lehmann has also been given a Criminal Behaviour Order, which - if breached - could result in imprisonment, a fine, or both, following a prosecution by the GDC. This is the first time that the GDC has sought – and had granted – a Criminal Behaviour Order.
