The BDA has joined health associations and unions to urge a ‘change of direction’ on NHS pay restraint in this week’s Queen’s Speech. Groups representing all parts of the health workforce have written a joint letter to the Prime Minister to say the 1% cap is now putting safe patient care at risk. Civil Service unions have also lobbied Chancellor on this issue.

Police have arrested a dental student from Huddersfield who has appeared in court accused of plotting terror attack. Mohammed Abbas Idris Awan is accused of preparing an act of terrorism. He is a fourth year dental student at Sheffield University and was arrested in June by the North East Counter-Terrorism Unit following a raid in Sheffield and one on his family home.

People across Leicestershire and Rutland will soon benefit from improved access to local NHS dental care after NHS England Central Midlands awarded seven contracts to dental service providers. The contracts – which include the provision of five new dental practices plus extended hours at an existing practice – represent an annual investment in in excess of £6.3 million, totalling more than £63 million over the 10-year contract period.
While root canals are effective in saving a tooth that has become infected or decayed, this age-old procedure may cause teeth to become brittle and susceptible to fracture over time. Now researchers at OHSU in Portland, Oregon, have developed a process by which they can engineer new blood vessels in teeth, creating better long-term outcomes for patients and clinicians.

The Queen’s Birthday Honours list this year includes Professor Nigel Hunt, Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery RCS, Serbjit Kaur, who worked at the DH under Barry Cockcroft and was responsible for commissioning guides and Linda Greenwall, secretary of the British Dental Bleaching Society.
Following the general election, Jeremy Hunt was confirmed as Secretary of State for Health. Philip Dunne MP remains as minister of state and Lord O'Shaughnessy as minister in the Lords. Two former ministers, David Mowat and Nicola Blackwood lost their seats in the election and have been replaced by Steve Brine MP and Jackie Doyle-Price MP, both formerly in the Whips Office.
