Some GDPUK readers may have felt rather old as they read a recent Times story about a GDC hearing involving an orthodontist. It turns out that the controversial orthodontist in the news now, is the son of the controversial orthodontist that they remember.

It may be a minority opinion but Steve Barclay, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, has decided that the NHS has enough money.
As the NHS dental access crisis shows no signs of abating, a Rugby based practice, Atwal & Barot, has, according to the BBC Coventry & Warwickshire News website, uploaded a recorded message to its answerphone advising would patients both private and NHS that it is operating at capacity and suggests that they contact their MP to talk about “the crisis in NHS dentistry”.

In another “soft launch” the GDC have quietly announced a consultation that could affect all registrants. It would add to the particular powers that the GDC has to suspend any registrant, before they have had the opportunity to defend themselves in the full Fitness to Practice (FTP) process.
Two online surveys conducted earlier this year by the American Dental Association – the ADA - one of 557 dentists and a second nationally representative survey of 1,006 consumers - have revealed that more than half of dentists (52%) reported patients arriving for appointments high on marijuana or another drug.

NHS England has confirmed that effective from Friday 25th November, Band Two courses of treatment that include filling or extracting or non-molar endodontic procedures on three or more teeth will be awarded 5 UDAs whilst molar endodontics will attract 7 UDAs.
The GDC have been under increasing pressure to come clean about the numbers of registrants taking their lives during Fitness to Practice (FTP) investigations. This has now got to the stage where the honesty of the GDC might be questioned by registrants.
