In his annual report the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) for Wales, Dr Tony Jewell, has called for more direct and also more innovative methods of delivering preventive care if advances in child oral health are to be made. He said: ‘In Wales we need to get more teeth in contact with fluoride via alternative methods.’

| A rather bizarre story comes to us from Japan where a dental clinic has started supplying fake crooked teeth to those with more traditional ‘Hollywood smile’. Dental Salon Plaisir says its ‘Stick-on Crooked Teeth’ will impart that desirable ‘imperfect’ look to men and women alike, making them more attractive to the opposite sex.

Chief Dental Office, Barry Cockcroft, has opened IDH’s new offices in Kearsley, near Manchester. It precedes the opening of a purpose built IDH Training Academy in 2012. A new help desk means that IDH practices can simply call one number for help, advice or support from head office.

There was a 4 per cent increase in the number of dental professors and lecturers during 2009-10, to a total of 390, and a 20 per cent increase in the number of clinical teachers to a total of 135. Prof Saunders, Chair of the Dental Schools Council, said the increase in the number was encouraging, but challenges in the current economic climate remained.

| NHS chief executive Sir David Nicholson has published details of the reformed commissioning system and the emerging national board. The purpose of the new NHS Commissioning Board to use ‘the commissioning budget of around £80bn a year to secure the best possible health outcomes for patients and communities.’ The Board will also directly commission NHS dentistry. |

| Prisoners at Wakefield Prison have been claiming compensation for poor dental care. The 24 inmates settled out of court with the NHS and were given a total of £47,000. They were also awarded more than £300,000 in legal fees. |
