The Government announced that 68 dental practices are now starting the new dental contract pilot studies. The trials will look at ways of increasing patient access and promoting preventative dental treatments like fluoride varnish. Health Secretary Andrew Lansley said: “It is vital that patients receive high quality dental care and we are committed to promoting good oral health and preventing dental decay, especially in children.â€ÂÂÂÂÂÂÂ
The BDA said the dental pilots were a ‘positive step’.

Facebook has shut down a page created by an angry parent upset at a California dentist who allegedly mistreated his son during a tooth extraction. But the parent is vowing to continue a campaign to close down the dentist's business, including creating a new Facebook page.

| A South Yorkshire dentist whose practice was shut down for ignoring hygiene rules has had ‘stringent conditions’ placed on him by the GDC. Mohammed Siddiqui, of Rotherham, was told that he will only be able to practise within the NHS and is subject to 21 stringent conditions for three years. He admitted 23 charges of poor dental practice at a conduct committee hearing. |

The British Dental Association is calling on dentists to nominate themselves for membership of the General Dental Practice Committee and 12 others representing practitioners working in general practice (including those who are wholly private), as well as other branches of the profession. It is not necessary to be a BDA member to stand for election.

Some dentists may be tempted to return the exact amount of clawback demanded by their Primary Care Trust (PCT). But National Association of Specialist Dental Accountants and Lawyers (NASDAL) member Johnny Minford strongly advises all dentists to check before they pay.
The National Association of Specialist Dental Accountants and Lawyers (NASDAL) was formerly known as NASDA, but changed its name to reflect the increasing number of lawyers who are members.

| The BDA Museum has bought ‘The Dentist’, by renowned portrait artist, Sir John Lavery. Painted in 1929, it features dentist Conrad Ackner in situ treating his patient, the artist’s wife, Lady Lavery. An appeal for help in raising the £60,000 required for the purchase saw donations flood in from individuals and BDA branches as well as a subsidy by national charities. |

| An unemployed Cincinnati man, Kyle Willis, 24, with no health insurance has died after a tooth infection spread to his brain. The man came down with toothache and was told he needed to have one of his wisdom teeth removed. But Willis decided to tough it out because he was out of work and couldn't afford the treatment. |

GDPUK has an exclusive interview with Martin Mills, celebrating the 40th anniversary of Dental Directory.
The Dental Directory started life in 1971 as the Billericay Dental Supply Company. Founded by Gordon Mills who remains the company chairman, the fledgling business began by offering a mail order service. Although Gordon, his son Martin and other staff would visit dentists if requested, it wasn’t until 1988 that the first sales representative was employed by which time the company had been renamed The Dental Directory.
