Like previous years, there will be a wide range of vibrant presentations and workshops to discover, covering topics including isolation techniques, veneer preparations, crown lengthening techniques, anterior composites and BACD Accreditation processes. Discussing his own involvement at this year’s event, Dr Oliver Harman says, “My sessions this year will be looking at the use of lasers in modern dentistry. Dr Mark Cronshaw and myself want to give delegates an overview of where we are today with this impressive technology, to explore some of the theoretical ideas and how they can be applied in practical scenarios to great effect.
“It sometimes takes a little while for technologies like this to transition from one sector to another. With already established applicability in medical situations, we want to show delegates how it is now time for lasers to be integrated more in dental work.
“We will be going through the wealth of evidence and research that has been conducted on the use of lasers to explain their viability in practice – as well as exploring a number of important cases that show how lasers have contributed positively to treatment.
“I think we’re very much at that point now – we’ve reached the critical mass where research, evidence and results have culminated to show how the use of lasers in dentistry can become truly mainstream.”
Dr Harman has extensive experience in all aspects of cosmetic and general aesthetic dentistry. Not only does he provide high quality treatment from his own clinic in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, he consults for clinics in Helsinki and Saudi Arabia. In 2010 he achieved the prodigious British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry Fellowship Award.
He says, “I think the BACD is a driving force behind the legitimising of cosmetic dentistry – for both professionals and patients. I also think the BACD is at the very forefront of cosmetic dentistry – and it’s bringing together the latest concepts from across the globe and has been a world leader in a minimally invasive approach. It really emphasises how we should not just focus on UK dentistry, but look worldwide for ideas and new techniques. It’s broadening our minds.”
With such a dynamic line-up of presentations and workshops to choose from, the BACD Annual Conference is an event which simply cannot be missed. For dental professionals of all levels, the three-day event will feature something for everyone – and is a great opportunity to meet and network with like-minded, enthusiastic and friendly colleagues. Be sure not to miss out: save the dates in your diary today!
The BACD’s 12th Annual Conference runs from 12th - 14th November 2015 at The Hilton London Metropole Hotel. Go to www.bacd.com, email Suzy Rowlands at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or call 0207 612 4166.
Included amongst a prodigious line-up of leading speakers were Chris Barrow, Dr Komal Suri, Bob McLelland, Sheila Scott, Jansie Van Rensberg and Tony Knight. The topics of their presentations were truly diverse and catered to a wide range of interests and specialities – but were united by truly forward-thinking philosophies.
The event was perfectly balanced by the Clinical Innovations Awards, held on the Friday evening in association with MyDentist. A chance to celebrate some of the achievements and innovative successes in the profession last year, it also gave delegates the opportunity to relax and network with like-minded colleagues.
Be sure to keep up to date with Healthcare Learning for information about next year’s event – sure to be as inspiring and educational as this year’s. Don’t miss out!

The well-established school-based supervised tooth brushing programme aims to promote the importance of oral health among children, reducing inequalities and instilling effective dental routines in young people.
The charity’s recent review of dental health among children involved in the scheme found an overall reduction in the presence of decayed, missing or filled teeth (dmft) in the past year. The number of those needing treatment reduced from 25% to 19% between January 2014 and May 2015.
This is encouraging news for both the public and the profession, but with work still to be done, it’s important for all to get involved and help improve oral health for the next generation.
