Most NHS dental patients rate their care as positive

The dental results of the latest GP Patient Survey for July/Sept 2014 have been announced. They show that 58% said that they had visited an NHS dentist in the last two years. 11% didn’t try to see an NHS dentist because they “didn’t need to go” or “do not like going” and 8% didn’t try because they “prefer private dentistry”. Of those who received NHS dental care in the last 2 years, 84% of respondents rated their NHS dental experience as positive, an increase of 0.5% compared with the previous year.

Fewer Scots are edentulous and more visit a dentist

The Scottish Government has reported that in 2013, nine in ten adults had some natural teeth, in line with their target that 90% of all adults living in Scotland would possess some natural teeth by 2010, although the proportion for women remained below the target level. In 2013, three quarters (74%) of adults reported visiting the dentist in the year prior to interview, an increase from 69% in 2009.

Oral screening is a role for dental hygienists and therapists, study suggests

A new study suggests that dental hygienists and therapists should be used to screen for dental caries and periodontal disease in a bid to improve the delivery of primary dental health care. The findings of the report – The Efficacy of Screening for Common Dental Diseases by Hygiene-Therapists A Diagnostic Test Accuracy Study – have important ramifications for service design in public-funded health systems, says Fiona Sandom, president of the British Association of Dental Therapists (BADT).

Memorial Service for the late Richard Thomas

The family of Richard Thomas, who died last weekend, have announced the arrangements for a Memorial Service, to which all are welcome. To gauge numbers, those planning to attend are asked to RSVP to the email address given below.

Richard Thomas, who had been ill for some time, was General Secretary, Federation of Local London Dental Committees. The funeral will be taking place privately.

Straumann to reduce salaries for Swiss staff

Straumann to cut bonuses for Swiss staff

Reuters reports that Swiss dental implant maker Straumann will reduce bonuses for Swiss-based staff and management to cut costs after the Swiss National Bank scrapped its cap on the franc, triggering a strengthening of the currency. Straumann also wants to pay cross-border workers in euros to counter the negative effects of the rising Swiss franc.

More NHS dental patients seen in England

Figures released by HSCIC show that during the years 2013 and 2014 a total of 30 million patients saw an NHS dentist, 1.9 million more than in 2006, although expressed as a percentage of the population this is a slight decrease since then. During the second quarter (Jul-Sep) of 2014 an estimated 10 million courses of treatment were provided, with increases in Band 1 and Urgent and decreases in Bands 2 and 3.
