Allegations of poor hygiene practices by Mr D'Mello led to 22,000 patients being recalled for blood tests. But out of 4,506 people tested only five were found positive for hepatitis C. Government statistics state the rate in the population is 0.32%, so in this sample, 14 cases would be expected. However a former patient of D'Mello is suing him for failing to spot that he had periodontal disease.

More than a third (35 per cent) of 12-year-olds and 28 per cent of 15-year-olds say they have been embarrassed to smile or laugh due to how they felt about the condition of their teeth during the past three months, Children's Dental Health (CDH) Survey 2013 shows. The survey is published by the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) and provides information on the dental health of children in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Dentists with private pensions are set to benefit from pension changes announced by George Osborne in his Budget today while dental practice-owners may see a reduction in their overheads thanks to a promised review of business rates. Nick Ledingham, Chairman of NASDAL, welcomed the budgetary changes announced by the Chancellor which are likely to cut business costs and also put more money in the pockets of potential dental patients.
A Dental Protection survey shows that nine in 10 dentists believe they are more likely to be sued now than five years ago. Of those, 81% believe the rise in media coverage of clinical negligence is the main reason, followed by high patient expectations (58%) and workload (28%). Kevin Lewis, Dental Director said: “Dentists are facing immense pressures, including rising patient expectations, heavy workloads, complex treatment options and a stream of negative media coverage.”

The Government has accepted the Doctors' and Dentists' Pay Review Body (DDRB) recommendations for a one per cent increase in GDPs’ pay, which will mean an increase in contract values in England of 1.34%. In Scotland there will be a 1.6% increase in fees. The BDA has criticised the DDRB award for its ‘approach and conclusions’. John Milne, outgoing GDPC Chairman said: “We are living in an era of pay restraint, but restraint should not mean pay cuts.”
