Type B prototypes closest to Jimmy Steele’s vision

In a session held at the British Dental Association conference in Manchester three of the authors of the 2009 Steele Review of NHS Dentistry examined the progress of contract reform over the past six years. Professor Steele said: “The development of viable prototypes is now a very important step. It is fair to say that the type B prototypes, where disease prevention and management are grouped together under capitation, are probably closest to the approach that we had envisaged.”

New rules allow new parents to spread out their leave says NASDAL

Dental practice-owners may need to draw on their powers of compromise in order to comply with the new rules on Shared Parental Leave (‘SPL’), says NASDAL. This allows parents to share up to 50 weeks’ leave in their child’s first year. The new rules apply to parents whose child is due to be born on or after 5 April 2015, allowing parents to share up to 50 weeks’ leave between them in a single continuous period or discontinuous, returning to work between periods of leave, before their child’s first birthday.

Polling Day: several dentists stand for election

Several dentists are standing for election to Parliament in the General Election today. GDPUK wishes them all luck.

Sir Paul Beresford, well known as a dentist and Conservative MP, has a safe seat in Mole Valley. Three other dental colleagues are standing too.

Ex-CDO shows support for dental therapists

In an interview with Fiona Sandom, president of the British Association of Dental Therapists (BADT), the former CDO, Barry Cockcroft said that many dentists tend to overestimate the public’s concern about receiving their oral health care from other members of the dental team. He also said that any reluctance by patients to receive treatment from a dental hygienist or dental therapist instead of a dentist would be ‘unusual’.

Military dentist to be new CDO for England

NHS England has announced the appointment of Sara Hurley BDS MFGDP(UK) MSc MA as Chief Dental Officer. She joins NHS England from the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine where she has worked hand in hand with the NHS. Concurrent with her Royal Centre for Defence Medicine responsibilities, Sara has been the Chief Dental Officer for the Army.

Dentistry overlooked in parties’ manifestos

The BDA says it is disappointed that none of the three major Westminster parties mention dentistry in their manifestos. Despite the long-awaited reformed NHS dental contract, and an ongoing discussion on public health by all parties, no explicit reference to dentistry or dentists has been made, the BDA reports.
