A woman who was convicted at the High Court in May 2013 of practising dentistry and unlawfully carrying on the business of dentistry – namely tooth whitening - when not registered with the GDC, has been refused permission to apply for judicial review in relation to her failed attempt to challenge the High Court’s decision. She was also ordered to pay £1500 towards the GDC’s costs.

Bridge2Aid workers say they were shocked by the dental condition of Magalita, someone they met late last year. They say: ‘You would think after 10 years of working in rural areas, we wouldn’t be surprised by what we see any more. But we regularly meet people whose desperation to escape dental pain is shocking, even to our seasoned team.’

Wayne Roberts who runs a private medical clinic in Liverpool had his fine of £15,000 reduced by £3,500 on appeal. The owner of a tanning and beauty salon in Hartlepool  and another who ran a beauty clinic in Lancashire were both given a conditional discharge, but ordered to pay the GDC’s costs. A mother and son in Essex also received a hefty fine for tooth whitening.

The Commons Health Committee has held a one off evidence session on children’s oral health. They were concerned about dental decay being the main cause of admission to hospital for children aged 5-9 and the high level of decay among some children. Only three MPs were present and the profession was represented by the CDO and dental head of Public Health England as well as two paediatric specialists.

Inspectors from the GDC have raised concerns about a visit to the Aberdeen Dental School in April 2014. They found that twelve patients suffered poor treatment at a the school. This included damage to an adjacent tooth after work was carried out and tissue damage caused by hypochlorite. Some endodontic patients ended up with perforations, the over preparation of teeth and the wrong tooth being worked on.
