The General Dental Council is standing by its decision to refuse the introduction of an instalment payment scheme for hard-pressed dental professionals, despite being made aware that many lower paid registrants are concerned that they may not be able to afford the forthcoming Annual Retention Fee payment due in July.

The BDA has launched a petition to extend business rates relief to dentists. Their chief executive Martin Woodrow has given his end of week video report on activity undertaken by the Association. In addition, media reports that Scottish dentists are facing ‘financial disaster’ plus reports from Ireland and the USA.

The National Association of Specialist Dental Accountants and Lawyers (NASDAL) have welcomed clarification on the potential issues that may arise when dentists were eligible to claim the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS) grant whilst also receiving their usual level of NHS income. It was highlighted that the amount of grant received may exceed the reduction of private income.

Dental Protection has welcomed the Court of Appeal decision to deny the Government permission to appeal the ruling which overturned regulations allowing the health secretary to suspend the payment of pensions to NHS professionals who had been charged with certain criminal offences but not yet convicted. This ruling follows the High Court decision in January this year that it was unlawful for the Government to suspend doctors’ pensions, after a judicial review brought by the BMA.

The British Association of Private Dentistry (BAPD) has written a long letter to MPs for England, responding to a letter sent them by the CDO for England recently. They say they were ‘shocked’ by the content of the letter ‘which simply does not represent the facts or the time line of recent events, and the experience of dentists and patients.’ It is calling all of their 5000 registered members to send the letter to their MPs.
