From Australia comes news that oral health is suffering during the pandemic. Meanwhile questions were asked in both the House of Commons and the Lords on dentistry during the Covid-19 pandemic, but received far from satisfactory answers. The BDA’s website is still down, so there have been no updates from them.

Harvard scientists have found that periodontal disease increases risk of throat and stomach cancer by as much as 50%, according to a report in the Daily Telegraph. The risk was even higher among those who had previously lost teeth, the research found. Periodontal conditions have been linked to a number of conditions.

The BDA has joined other bodies calling for action on elements in the Childhood Obesity Plan that relate to improving oral health, including extending the the ‘sugar tax’ to milk-based drinks, restrictions on the marketing and advertising of junk food, improved front-of-pack nutrition labelling, implementing the agreed ban on the sale of energy drinks to children, and reducing sugar in infants food and drinks.

The British Orthodontic Society has been continuing to raise awareness of the potential dangers of DIY Orthodontics to members of the public. An article recently appeared in The Mail on Sunday and also in the MailOnline. It was hard hitting and the BOS hope it will educate many more members of the public about the dangers of DIY Orthodontics.
The British Dental Industry Association (BDIA) has launched a new online directory of members’ products and services that will allow dental practices to safely provide the best possible oral care to patients under challenging circumstances. The BDA has recently been the victim of a serious cyber attack, so it is currently impossible to keep up to date with Covid-19 developments from their website.

The latest GP survey has been published for the quarter Jan-Mar 2020. 84.3% of respondents rated their NHS dental experience as positive. 91.6% of those that tried to get an appointment were successful. 42.1% had not tried to get an appointment with an NHS dentist and of these, 37.4% were seen privately.
