Tooth decay by far the biggest reason for hospital admission

Data released by the Health and Social Care Information Centre show that the number of admissions for dental problems among 5 to 9-year-olds rose from 22,574 in 2010-11 to 25,812 in 2013-14. Kathryn Harley, a consultant in paediatric dentistry, told the Sunday Times: “We have children who require all 20 of their baby teeth to be extracted. It beggars belief that their diets could produce such a drastic effect.”

GDC defends ‘that’ advert

The General Dental Council (GDC) has defended placing an advertisement in the Daily Telegraph saying that it was part of a publicity campaign to promote the Dental Complaints Service. It claims that 27% of patients do not know where to complain about poor treatment. It also said the cost was £5,500

BSPD welcomes change in GDC guidance

After 18 months of lobbying, the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry and other senior UK dentists have achieved a change in the regulations governing tooth whitening in patients under 18. This month the General Dental Council (GDC) amended its guidance to allow dentists to give patients with discolored teeth the treatment they need.

Hygienist raises £20,000 for charity

A dental hygienist has raised almost £20,000 for Mouth Cancer Action by walking 500 miles across the UK. Christina Chatfield, owner of Dental Health Spa Brighton, finished her ‘500 Miles 4 Smiles’ walk on 19 June in Brighton, marking the end of an extraordinary month. The walk started at Christina’s first practice in Kirriemuir, Scotland. More than 300 people joined the walk on various legs of the route in support of Mouth Cancer Action.

BDA challenges GDC to justify its inflammatory advertisement

Chair of BDA Principal Executive Committee Mick Armstrong has asked GDC Chair Bill Moyes to justify why a cash-strapped GDC paid for an irresponsible, inflammatory advert that appeared in the Daily Telegraph. Commenting, Dr Armstrong described the provocative advert was ‘yet another slap in the face for UK dentists’. He said: ‘It demonstrates a lack of intention to properly engage with the profession and signals distrust and hostility.’

Dental Protection signposts route for ARF protest

Although sharing the concerns of those alarmed by the size of the increase, Dental Protection is warning dental professionals to tread carefully when making public their reaction and also to think before considering withholding their ARF as both actions would threaten their registration and ability to practise lawfully. Kevin Lewis, Dental Director for Dental Protection warned of the profession’s ‘growing loss of confidence in its regulator’.
