The British Orthodontic Society (BOS) has launched a new online resource to support the decision-making of the rising number of adults opting for orthodontic treatment. The new publication – The BOS Guide to Orthodontics for Adults - is a first for BOS in that it’s designed for patients to read before they see a clinician. Tooth decay among five-year-olds continues significant decline, according to the oral health survey published by Public Health England. Less than 25% of the cohort suffers from tooth decay, a 20 per cent drop since 2008. Sandra White, director of dental public health at Public Health England, said: “This is great news. However, one child with tooth decay is one too many.”

The Dental Institute has scored an unmatched 98% overall satisfaction in the 2015 National Student Survey, the highest rating for any programme of study at King’s College London. The achievement shows a 5% rise on the 2014 results, showcasing the high standard of education performed at the faculty. Earlier this year Dentistry at King’s wasranked first in the UK, and had risen to fourth in the world.

Dr Colette Bridgman MBE has been appointed Wales’ new Chief Dental Officer, the Welsh Government has announced She has been a Consultant in Dental Public Health in the North West of England since 2003, and strategic dental lead for Greater Manchester since 2013. She has also held appointments in Public Health England and the Office of the Deputy Chief Dental Officer for NHS England.

The British Dental Association (BDA) has called on the profession to lend its support to gender neutral vaccinations for the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). The BDA is one of 44 organisations supporting the HPV Action coalition – that is looking to see the current UK vaccination programme for girls extended to include all adolescent boys.

The price of private dental care in the UK varies dramatically by postcode, with a difference of 80% in price for routine check-ups across the country. The average cost for a simple check-up is now £51, an increase of a 42% compared to last year, and 11% in the past six months, according to new research released by a healthcare search engine.

Liverpool City Council has launched a high-profile profile campaign entitled "Is your child's sweet tooth harming their health?" which will outline how many sugar cubes are in drinks such as Lucozade, Coca-Cola, Tropicana, Capri-Sun and Ribena. Public Health Liverpool says around 2,000 children in the city will have had tooth extractions by the age of five with more than a third suffering from tooth decay, and recently a 14-year-old child needed 15 adult teeth removing.

Replying to a question in the House of Lords from Lord Hunt of King’s Heath, health minister Lord Prior said that the Government took ‘a keen interest’ in the performance of the GDC and its plans for improvement. But he ruled out asking the National Audit Office to carry out a ‘value for money’ examination of the GDC’s financial management.
