The owner of a cosmetic dental clinic called The Smile Centre has struck off for "deplorable" conduct. He has previously amassed four criminal convictions for illegal dentistry, the GDC said in its judgement. Barrie Semp ‘dishonestly’ claimed he ran ‘the most advanced denture clinic in all of Manchester’, they said.

A study at Queen’s Medical Centre Nottingham’s A&E unit, published in BDJ, has identified self-medication for dental pain with paracetamol as a significant cause of accidental overdose and potential liver failure. Henrik Overgaard-Nielsen, GDPC chair said: “Sadly lives are now at risk as failure to provide sufficient care for dental emergencies is leaving patients to self-medicate.”

A care home manager has spoken of her struggle to find a dentist who will check the teeth of residents with dementia and wants Health and Social Care Secretary Jeremy Hunt to take action. She has told carehome.co.uk that despite asking dentists to visit the care home in Banbury, most have refused to, claiming they are not trained to treat people with dementia.

New research has made a promising discovery for the continued health of millions of heart attack survivors globally, as looking after their oral health has been found to help their cardiovascular system recover. CEO of the Oral Health Foundation, Nigel Carter said: "This is incredibly interesting research which could offer hope to the future of millions of people affected by cardiovascular disease.”

Speaking at the annual conference of the Irish Dental Association in Galway, Dr Sally McCarthy, who specialises in treating sports injuries, emphasised the importance of wearing mouthguards. Up to 20% of players of contact sports will undergo serious dental trauma during their playing careers, a dentist and former pentathlete has warned.

There were smiles all round as the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) reached its ten-year milestone in dentistry training. The School of Dentistry has produced more than 220 new dentists since opening its doors a decade ago. Angela Magee, Head of the School of Dentistry, commented: “What we have achieved over the last ten years is phenomenal.”

At a recent meeting in London, convened by Dr Jeremy Cooper of Salford, representatives from major dental organisations considered an idea to form a new charity to operate a helpline for dentists under stress. The service should be available 24/7, 365 days a year and to be there to listen, empathise and if necessary ‘signpost’ people to organisations to help them with their problems.
