Dental Protection has welcomed the Court of Appeal decision to deny the Government permission to appeal the ruling which overturned regulations allowing the health secretary to suspend the payment of pensions to NHS professionals who had been charged with certain criminal offences but not yet convicted. This ruling follows the High Court decision in January this year that it was unlawful for the Government to suspend doctors’ pensions, after a judicial review brought by the BMA.

The British Association of Private Dentistry (BAPD) has written a long letter to MPs for England, responding to a letter sent them by the CDO for England recently. They say they were ‘shocked’ by the content of the letter ‘which simply does not represent the facts or the time line of recent events, and the experience of dentists and patients.’ It is calling all of their 5000 registered members to send the letter to their MPs.

Jason Wong MBE has been appointed Deputy Chief Dental Officer for England, in succession to Janet Clarke who retired last year. He will work alongside CDO Sara Hurley and Deputy CDO Eric Rooney in collaboration with local and regional teams to deliver improved outcomes for patients, and champion the role of dentists and dentistry within the health system.

A team at the University of Sheffield dental school led by Academic Clinical Fellow Laura Timms is preparing to make an information video aimed at children aged 3-10. The topic of the video is Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF), a technique that helps arrest dental decay and is funded by RCS/BSPD.

New research from the Oral Health Foundation shows millennials outstrip other generations when it comes to spending on their smiles. Data collected shows adults under-35 are spending a staggering £750 a year on dental treatment – more than three times the national average. |This is around four times more than their parents and nearly eight times that of their grandparents.
