Exclusive Interview with GDC Chair Prof Kevin O'Brien

Now that Professor Kevin O'Brien has completed a year in the Chair of the General Dental Council, he responded to an earlier request for an exclusive interview with GDPUK and its' membership. GDPUK members formed questions for the interview over the summer on the site's forum, and then these were supplemented by a face to face interview with Tony Jacobs near Kevin's home in Manchester.

Benevolent Fund launches children’s appeal
Over half of the families the BDA Benevolent Fund currently helps are on means-tested benefits and therefore some of the poorest people in society.  The festive season puts extra pressure those dentists who are already struggling financially, and the Fund helps them and their dependents with a Christmas grant.

Enlighten offer bleaching light buyback

In a bid to help dental practices meet the new tooth whitening Directive, which is now in force as of today, Enlighten, as part of their Bleaching Light Buyback Programme, is offering to buy back bleaching lights from dentists.

BDTA welcomes new whitening rules

BDTA welcomes new whitening rules
The British Dental Trade Association (BDTA) has welcomed the amendment to the UK cosmetic regulations which comes into force on Oct 31. The amendment means that tooth whitening products containing or releasing between 0.1 and 6 per cent hydrogen peroxide can now only be sold to dental practitioners, and that their first use on patients must be by a dental professional in a dental setting.

Another fiasco forecast for FD training next year
The British Dental Association’s (BDA) Judith Husband has called on the Department of Health to act immediately to avert the possibility of UK dentistry graduates being denied foundation training places again in 2013. There have been 1.139 applicants for 952 places, a shortfall of almost 200.

Dentist told to remove old magazines
A PCT infection control worker has advised a dentist to stop keeping back issues of periodicals in the waiting room, because they are a health and safety risk.  Monica Symes a dentist in Lyme Regis, Dorset, was warned that they could lead to her failing an inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).
