Medical practitioner to chair NICE

Medical practitioner to chair NICE
A general practitioner is to be the new chair of the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). Professor David Haslam is currently the national clinical adviser to the Care Quality Commission, chair of the NICE Evidence Accreditation Advisory Board and an expert member of the NHS National Quality Board.

Professor Haslam is the immediate past president of the British Medical Association. He also served as a president and chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners. From 1976-2011 he was a GP in Huntingdon.

He will replace Sir Michael Rawlins who has chaired NICE since it was set up more than a decade ago. The appointment is subject to approval by the health select committee which will make a recommendation about whether to proceed with the appointment. New York has implemented a special initiative this year called “Operation Prevent” to prevent fake ID usage in New York State. The police and administrative offices have spent years identifying the “hot spots” where teenagers typically try to buy or use fake IDs. When the person submits their ID to be checked or scanned, they have a machine that lets them know if it’s legitimate.
