Millions of Britons have no local dentist willing to take on new NHS patients, a Times investigation has found. The BDA has long criticised the ‘cost limited funding system’ for dentistry that can provide care for little over half the population. It also says the government is failing to honour two successive manifesto pledges to make a decisive break from the target driven contract system introduced in 2006.

A private dental practice in Cheltenham has closed after being labelled as unsafe by the CQC. Patients arriving at the surgery found a handwritten notice on the front door saying that it is closed “due to unforeseen circumstances”. Those telephoning have been told that it is “temporarily closed”.
Given the choice of having to “choose between never being able to eat cheese again or never being able to eat chocolate again” 50% of Britons said they would give up chocolate compared to 47% who would give up cheese, according to a survey carried out by consumer analysts Mintel. Meanwhile, 3% say they don't like either.
Scotland's health service running costs were £11.7 billion last year, up by almost £900million in real terms since 2012/13 thanks to big increases in staffing and drugs expenditure, according to the latest NHS figures. However seven areas, including dentistry, saw their funding decrease.
Frequent regular use of over-the-counter mouthwash was associated with increased risk of developing pre-diabetes/diabetes in this population, according to new research. Overweight people who use mouthwash twice a day are 50% more likely to develop diabetes. The anti-bacterial fluid could be killing off helpful microbes in the mouth.
The extra money announced by the Chancellor in the Budget for the NHS in England is not enough, health service bosses say. Philip Hammond announced an immediate £350m boost for this winter followed by £1.6bn more next year for the front line above the rise already planned. He also said any pay rises for NHS staff next year would not need to come from the front-line budget.
