Richard Graham elected Chair of NI Dental Practice Committee

Richard Graham has been elected Chair of the Northern Ireland Dental Practice Committee. Susan Nelson and Derek Manson have also been elected to serve as the Committee’s vice chairs. Accepting the position, Richard Graham said: “I look forward to representing and promoting the interests of all dentists working in General Practice in Northern Ireland over the coming years.”

NHS practice goodwill values remain high - NASDAL

The results of the most recent practice goodwill survey have just been released by The National Association of Specialist Dental Accountants and Lawyers (NASDAL). The sales market is still in robust form with NHS practices commanding high values even though Private and Mixed practices may have seen a small fall back in terms of deals done.

Tooth loss linked to frailty in older men

Oral health problems such as gum disease and tooth loss have been linked to frailty in older British men, a new study has revealed. Dr Nigel Carter, Chief Executive of the Oral Health Foundation, says older adults are more likely to experience issues in the mouth and this can have a direct effect on their overall wellbeing.

Benefits cheat offers illegal teeth whitening

Benefits cheat reality TV star Chelsey Harwood 'offers illegal £45 teeth whitening treatments' The 30-year-old has been advertising the treatments on Facebook, offering to give clients a whiter smile in their own homes. The GDC has warned that this could be illegal because they don't involve dentists.

Syrian refugee dentist in Wales gets training loan

A Cardiff refugee has become the first in Wales to benefit from a loan system that will help him regain the ability to work as a dentist. He has got a £10,000 loan from RefuAid which supports skilled refugees back into work and has so far helped 12. Mohammed Al-Homsi qualified in Syria but needs to re-qualify to practise in the UK.

Hospital dental extractions continue to rise

The Local Government Association has claimed that hospitals carried out multiple tooth extractions on around 170 children every working day in the UK last year. There were 42,911 hospital procedures to remove teeth from patients aged 18 and under in 2016-17 at a cost of more than £36 million. There has been a rise of 17% over the past four years, up from 36,833 in 2012-13.
