GPs “will go insane” unless limits are imposed on the number of patients they see each day, the BMA claims. They have called for a cap on the number of patients, with doctors pointing to the system in Sweden, where GPs see 13 patients in a typical day. Some GPs said they often had 70 consultations in a single day – and this could not be safe for them or their patients.

The BDA has responded to an article that appeared on the Dentistry.co.uk website entitled an interview with Ian Brack in which the GDC Chief Executive revealed the Annual Retention Fee will remain unchanged at £890 in 2019. BDA Chair, Mick Armstrong said: “When the budget for 2019 hasn’t even been formally agreed by the Council, it is not a good look for the GDC’s Chief Executive to unveil the figures in this manner”.
Chile’s sugar tax has led to a 21.6% reduction in sales of sugary drinks in Chile between 2011 and 2015. The study by an international team led by researchers at the University of York seems to show that the tax has been successful reducing the nation’s preference for all things sweet. It reflects early findings of the sugar obesity strategy in the UK.

In a reshuffle, brought about by the resignation of two cabinet ministers, long-serving health secretary, Jeremy Hunt has been moved up to become Foreign Secretary. His place as the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care goes to Matt Hancock MP for West Suffolk, who was formerly at the Digital, Culture, Media and Sport department.

The Health Department were challenged by Mike Amesbury Labour MP for Weaver Vale on the vexed subject of the BSA’s penalty charge scheme for dentistry. Replying Steve Brine MP said they recognised patients’ concerns and continuously reviewed contact from patients who feel they have incorrectly received a penalty.

Staying with the same GP reduces the chance of premature death, a study by Exeter Medical School, published in BMJ Open has found. This echoes a finding of the Steele Review of NHS dentistry, which said: “Continuity of care matters to patients and to dentists. It is important in building a relationship of trust and a philosophy of lifelong care.”
