New initiative to improve child oral health in Manchester

Thousands of young children are to benefit from a new £1.5m programme aimed at transforming the dental health of under 5s across Greater Manchester. The new initiative will see supervised toothbrushing introduced in schools and nurseries plus dental care incorporated into health visitor checks in areas where particularly large numbers of young children suffer from tooth decay.

Ousted MP to be health minister in the House of Lords

A former MP and health minister, Nicola Blackwood has been given a peerage and appointed as a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department of Health and Social Care. Ms Blackwood became the MP for Oxford West and Abingdon in 2010, and a health minister from 2016, but lost her seat in the 2017 general election to the Liberal Democrats’ Layla Moran.

Sweets to be banned at tills

Promotional deals on unhealthy snacks placed at shop tills could be curbed under a proposed government clampdown on the epidemic in childhood obesity. Public health minister, Steve Brine, said: “Preventing ill health is critical to our long-term plan for the NHS and I want to do everything in my power to keep people healthy for longer. Daily Mail says ‘costly’ scale and polish 'may be unnecessary’

The Daily Mail article quotes a Cochrane Review that found little or no difference between regular planned scale and polish treatments compared with no scheduled scale and polish for the early signs of gum disease. But the article says that ‘the often costly service’ may be unnecessary for those with good teeth and makes ‘no difference’ to dental health.

Clinical waste collection for dentists in Scotland threatened

Employees at a Scottish waste disposal firm that is under criminal investigation have been laid off, after Healthcare Environmental Services (HES) lost nearly 20 health service contracts. NHS Scotland said its contract, which covered every hospital, GP surgery, NHS pharmacy and dental practice, would not be renewed in April 2019.

New study: Dark-coloured berries may lower the risk of tooth decay

A new study has found that nutrients in cranberries and blueberries can be highly effective in protecting the teeth against a strand of bacteria responsible for accelerating tooth decay. However, along with other fruit, they may also contain high amounts of natural sugar. One portion of cranberries contains up to four grams of sugar while a serving of blueberries is nearly ten grams.
