The parents of a 5-year-old girl say a Las Vegas dentist set their daughter’s mouth on fire as she underwent a routine dental procedure. They have filed a lawsuit in state district court against Deep Karan Dhillon for injuries the girl suffered. According to court documents, the dentist used a diamond bur to smooth the girl’s teeth while she was under anesthetics.

During Sugar Awareness Week (January 20-26) different opinions have emerged over the effectiveness of the so-called sugar tax. The Faculty is encouraging dentists and dental practices offering botulinum toxin injections to ensure their marketing is legally compliant. New guidance says there can be no direct references to a prescription-only medicine or treatment, whether via a brand name, brand-like name or in the generic, including in images and hashtags or in promotions such as sale packages and competition prizes.
Research has been done comparing how patients value and respond to information on risk given in three different forms during dental check-ups. The PREFER randomised controlled trial has been published. It aims to compare patient preference for, and subsequent change in, oral health behaviour for three forms of risk information given at dental check-ups.

The dental community must act to prevent burnout amongst dentists so they stay in practice rather than quit the profession, according to Dental Protection. In a new report it says burnout creates problems not just for the dentist involved but can impact patients and the wider dental team. Raj Rattan, Dental Director, said: “When I talk to dentists throughout UK, it is clear that morale is low, and well-being issues are rising up the professional agenda.”
