He also wanted the Secretary of State to look into private dentists, ‘many of which are encouraging patients to undergo operations that they certainly do not need’ |

No comments| Health Secretary, Andrew Lansley has announced an additional £28 million of funding for dentistry in order to ‘increase the number of people able to access an NHS dentist’. The Department of Health said that 820,000 more people had already been given access since May 2010. The extra funding will, it is claimed, enable an extra 180,000 to be seen bringing ‘the number of extra people now able to access an NHS dentist to one million’. |

| John Milne, from Wakefield West Yorkshire threw off a challenge from Eddie Crouch and was re-elected as chair of the BDA’s General Dental Practice Committee. He has held the post for three years and has been closely involved with the Department’s pilots for a new GDP contract. The election is by members of the Committee and the result was Milne 36, Crouch 21. |

Despite widespread criticism of the new dental foundation recruitment exercise, Chris Franklin Professor COPDEND Chair says he was very pleased with how well the process had gone. Of the 1109 students who attended interviews, 182 (16.4%) were unsuccessful and even if they graduate this year, may never be able to work as a dentist in the NHS. Professor Franklin said he understood that the uncertainty caused may be ‘unsettling’. GDPUK understands that the DF year is also viewed internationally as part of the qualification process for UK dental graduates, and the lack of this training place will affect the long term careers of young unemployed graduates. |

The General Dental Council (GDC) has informed UK dental schools of an EU requirement that dentists’ studies should total five years and that time spent during a first degree may not count towards the dental training programme. A decision is expected by the end of the year. In the meantime the GDC says those qualifying this summer will be put on the Register. |
