The GMB union has instructed a law firm to take legal action on behalf of members driving for Uber on the grounds that the company is in breach of a legal duty to provide them with basic rights on pay, holidays, health and safety and on discipline and grievances. If successful this case could set a precedent for other self-employed workers such as dental associates.

Recording smart phone video “selfies” of tooth-brushing can help people learn to improve their oral health care techniques, according to a new study. Using smart phones propped on stands, study participants filmed their brushing at home. Researchers saw an increase in the accuracy of brush strokes, an increase in number of strokes and an overall 8 percent improvement in tooth-brushing skill—but the length of time a person brushed did not change.

The General Dental Council (GDC) has successfully prosecuted a limited company and a woman from Hertfordshire, for illegal tooth whitening and carrying out dentistry while not on the dental register. In only the second prosecution of a limited company, BeauSynergy and Michelle Chapman pleaded guilty at a hearing at St Albans Magistrates' Court.

The Telegraph has published a list of the top 10 dental schools in the UK, compiled by the Complete University Guide (CUG). Glasgow comes out top, followed by Manchester and Queen Mary, London. The descriptions of the schools have been prepared for prospective students.
A 47-year-old man from Runcorn, Cheshire has received 300 hours community service and and was ordered to pay £1,600 prosecution costs for selling tooth whitener containing 146 times the safe level of hydrogen peroxide, after pleading guilty to 11 offences at Warrington Magistrates Court. Trading Standards officers used a sting to buy three products from Stanton’s eBay business after receiving a tip-off.

The Daily Mail reports that Desmond D'Mello, who faces more than 50 allegations of misconduct for poor hygiene, has refused to attend his Fitness to Practise hearing or be legally represented. It will however continue in his absence. His nurse, Caroline Surgey, was reprented by her lawyer who admitted all charges on her behalf.
