Heavier penalties for late tax returns

Penalties for late submission of tax returns have just got more stringent, according to Bob Cummings, tax specialist to the National Association of Specialist Dental Accountants (NASDA). He explained that HM Revenue and Customs have changed the penalty system for late submission. Quite simply, the later your tax return is submitted, the more you will be penalised.

Kate Middleton is said to have been receiving treatment from Harley Street dentist Dr Didier Fillion even before her engagement. Dr Tif Qureshi, from the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, says it looks as though Kate has been secretly having orthodontic treatment. “It looks as though she’s had some whitening treatment and tooth edge augmention to make her teeth all the correct length,” he said.

Cardiff researcher wins international award

Breakthroughs in the regeneration of bone and dental tissue have won a Cardiff University researcher a leading award for young dental scientists. Dr Alastair Sloan received the International Association for Dental ResearchÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s Young Investigator Award at the annual general session in San Diego, USA. He received a plaque and US$3,500.

Scotland rules on autoclaves

The Scottish Health Technologies Group has determined that there is lack of evidence to conclude that requiring the provision of vacuum sterilisers in primary care dental practices in Scotland would increase patient safety and thereby justify the cost. This advice statement means non-vacuum phase autoclaves can continue to be used in primary care dental settings in Scotland.

GDC calls for views on new temporary registration guidelines

The General Dental Council (GDC) has released details of draft plans to change guidelines about the temporary registration of dentists. An online consultation on the issue is now open and closes on 22 July 2011. Temporary registration allows overseas dentists to practise dentistry in the UK in supervised posts for training, teaching or research purposes only and for a limited period.

Audit Commission suggests savings in orthodontics

The Audit Commission has published a health briefing suggesting that the NHS could save up to £500 million a year by carrying out fewer ineffective or inefficient treatments. Minister announces 62 pilots
