CDO seeks clarification on bleaching

The government is pressing the European Parliament for clarification on dental bleaching to end the current confusion which has seen dentists and dental suppliers under investigation by Trading Standards Offices.  Chief Dental Officer, Barry Cockcroft told the British Dental Bleaching Society that they aimed to put a proposal before the European Parliament within a matter of weeks.

After three months of legal tussles, Mike Volk of Dental Directory quoted from the “unambiguous” letterhis company had received from Essex County Council:

“This Service is in agreement with the view of dental professionals and organisations such as the BDA that the safest place for cosmetic teeth whitening to take place is in the care of registered dental professionals, and it is not in the public interest for action to be taken to restrict the supply to dentists of the necessary raw materials and whitening kits to make this possible.”

Dr Cockcroft said this view was “realistic” there was no guarantee that would be the norm. The proposal will be published before Health Secretary Andrew Lansley and Industry Minister Ed Davey’s ministerial visit to Brussels next month. Dr Cockcroft said he was confident that this was “an opportunity to sort this out properly in Europe”.
