Lesley Naismith, Support Manager at Software of Excellence put aside her fear of flying and heights in the autumn, when she parachuted to raise funds for a trip that will provide dental care for orphaned children in Burma. Lesley headed to Burma in November with Henrik Overgaard-Nielsen and his wife Sharon Bierer owners of “NHS Dentist” in Fulham and three other London practices.

Testing by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) has revealed that the Tianjie Dental Falcon device lacks sufficient shielding in the X-ray tube, which could give rise to high patient doses and under typical high radiographic workloads result in operator doses in excess of the Ionising Radiation Regulations 1999 annual dose limits. This could give rise to adverse health effects caused by radiation.

Following the retirement of Andrew Lamb, Pat Kilpatrick has been appointed as the new Director of the British Dental Association (BDA) for Scotland. She will take up her post in January 2013 and brings to the post extensive experience in the healthcare sector including operational and strategic management, policy development, and postgraduate teaching and research. She is not a dentist.

Stephen Dorrell MP, chair of the Commons Health Committee has described it as ‘extraordinary’ that the Care Quality Commission (CQC) had yet to define its core purpose. A report on the CQC’s performance found a ‘worrying disconnect’ between official inspection results and the real standards experienced by patients. It also failed to communicate the results of its inspections to patients, residents and their families, the report found.The Committee’s conclusions and recommndations appear below.

A quartet of financial investors is in the running to buy Oasis Healthcare, the UK’s second-largest private dental chain, for as much as £160m, according to a report in the Sunday Telegraph. It is believed a total of seven potential bidders received management presentations from dental chain Oasis.
