GDC raises concerns over CPD for DCPs
In her report to the General Dental Council (GDC) the CEO, Evlynne Gilvarry raised concerns about those Dental Care Professionals (DCPs) who may not have complied with the requirements of the first five year cycle of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) when it ends in July. She said she was also conscious of the implications of a significant reduction in the DCP workforce, as well as reduction in GDC income if significant numbers are removed from the register.

Currently there are 63,597 DCPs registered with the GDC, of whom 39,880 (63%) DCPs are within the 2008-2013 CPD cycle. Of the 39,880 registrants,19,396 DCP registrants have now submitted sufficient hours for compliance and a further 12,268 are on-track with only a few CPD hours remaining to submit, this accounts for 79% of the DCP cohort.

The GDC remains concerned about 3,573 (9%) of the total cohort who have submitted no hours at this stage. 2,741 (7%) of the total cohort who have submitted less than 25 Verifiable hours and/or less than 50 hours in total at this stage. 1,883 (5%) of the total cohort who have submitted up to 37 Verifiable hours and/or less than 74 hours in total at this stage In total 8,197 (21%) of the 2008-2013 CPD cohort remain a concern. Many of these are either dental nurses or dental technicians.

A comprehensive communications plan has been implemented to alert the DCP registrant base of  the deadline for submission and the GDC is also alerting dentists so that they may support their staff to meet the deadline.
