Patients claiming free prescriptions in England face checks before medicine is issued in an effort to stamp out fraud, which currently costs the NHS an estimated £256m a year. The new digitised system to be piloted next year will mean pharmacies can instantly verify who is entitled to free medication. Other measures will include a new drive to catch dentists who claim payments for services they have not carried out.

The Oral Health Foundation is calling for free dental care for mouth cancer patients to combat the costs of ongoing healthcare that survivors are often burdened with, calling them a discriminatory ‘tax on cancer’. The charity estimates that mouth cancer sufferers could face dental costs of up to £1,500 over five years – around five times higher than that of the national average.

Coca-Cola has scaled back its annual Christmas truck tour as resistance was growing to the company giving out free sugary drinks. Asda and Tesco have been urged to review their partnership with the tour. The BDA has urged Coca Cola to drop the spin on the ’healthy options’ offered on its Christmas tour - and says its sugar-free brands are more acidic than lemon juice and vinegar.

The BDA has received confirmation that dentists in England will get a 1.68 per cent uplift in their December pay run which should be seen in early January 2019. BDA Vice Chair Eddie Crouch said: “Dentists are usually bitterly resigned to the late application of the contract in addition to the paltry amount being offered. However this year’s delays represent a new low”.

Experts in the field of HPV and the diseases it can cause have written to the public health minister Steve Brine MP urging him to offer HPV vaccination to boys aged up to 18 as a catch-up programme. This would run alongside the vaccination programme for 12/13 year old boys which the government intends to rollout from September 2019.

Cases of mouth cancer in the UK have more than doubled inside the last generation, yet an alarming number of people are still unable to identify the early warning signs and symptoms. Last year, more than 8,300 British adults were given the news that they had mouth cancer. This is an increase of around 135% compared with 20 years ago and the highest since records began.
