GDC told to prioritise oral cancer detection

Speaking in response to a question in the House of Lords by dentist Baroness Gardner of Parkes, Earl Howe said that he was asking the General Dental Council (GDC) to increase the priority given to the detection of oral cancer, and to include it as a recommended topic in continuing professional development (CPD) for dentists. There is to be a public consultation on the GDC’s proposals in 2012.

Baroness Gardner said that the Minister’s reply would be welcomed by the dental profession, adding that alcohol consumption has been an important factor in the increase in incidences of mouth cancer amongst young people.

The debate also saw the connection between oral cancer and human papilloma virus discussed, with the minister explaining that research since 2009 has established sufficient evidence to suggest that infection with HPV is a risk factor in response to questioning from Baroness Masham of Ilton.
