Blow to Government fluoridation plans

Southampton City council has voted by 2-1 to oppose the fluoridation of its water supply. Earlier this year the local Strategic Health Authority (SHA) won the legal right to introduce the measure. It has also been announced that NHS North West has abandoned its plans to spend £200 million on a fluoridation consultation.

The Southampton vote means that councillors have agreed to use their future powers, in the field of public health, to reverse the decision made by the health authority. Responsibility for all public health will pass to local authorities when strategic health authorities are abolished.

Water fluoridation remains Government policy in its bid to improve oral health especially of schoolchildren.
