… in Wales. David Thomas has been appointed chief dental officer (CDO) for Wales in succession to Paul Langmaid. He was previously deputy CDO and will provide dental advice for the National Assembly for Wales.

The Chief Dental Officer (CDO) provides professional leadership for dental advice in the National Assembly for Wales, close links with the professions and other staff across government, expert advice and a coherent input to policy across Government.

David qualified as a dentist in Cardiff in 1976.  After qualifying he spent 10 years as an associate dentist and principal in general dental practice in Cardiff city centre. In 1995 he was appointed as a consultant in dental public health to Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Health Authorities. In 2003 he was appointed director of dental postgraduate education for the Oxford Deanery.


In September 2004 David returned to Wales as director of dental public health in SE Wales. Since 2008 David has led the All Wales Dental Public Health Team.  David has published widely in academic dental journals and has been invited to speak at both national and international dental public health conferences.

David is married with two grown up children. He enjoys hill walking and sailing in his spare time
