The march of the robots into dentistry continues. In early 2022 GDPUK reported on a robotic implant assistant being used in Los Angeles, and two years later we reported the first crown preparation on a human subject by a robot. Now, it is time to introduce the robot receptionist.
As AI systems look to make appointments and deal with an increasing range of enquiries, Ukrainian startup VUZOLL is seeking to take the digitalization of the service sector one stage further, with a physical presence in practices. It is developing intelligent robot assistants capable of carrying out reception duties and automating routine business processes, by combining artificial intelligence, robotics, and business process automation.
The founder of VUZOLL is Roman Niskhodovskiy, a dentist from Kyiv who has been practicing for 12 years and has previously set up his dental clinic there. The idea for the startup was born in the clinic where Roman observed that administrators physically did not have time to respond to patients’ requests promptly, and doctors could not constantly maintain contact.
This led to the realisation that modern medical care requires not only professional doctors, but also modern technologies that help create a better quality communication service with the patient. A blend of AI, robotics, and medicine was required.
Dr Niskhodovskiy believes that this work will create a new culture of human-machine interaction. The VUZOLL robot can meet customers, recognize faces, speak in a natural way, provide advice, make records in CRM systems, and even respond to emotions.
The robot assistants are versatile and can be adapted for use in a wide range of service businesses, including clinics, beauty salons, hotels, educational institutions, showrooms, and retail spaces. In Roman’s opinion, the VUZOLL robot is not just a "talking robot," but an intelligent employee whose goal is to reduce the workload on staff and improve the level of service.
The robot performs routine administrative tasks without errors or delays, and also collects feedback and analyses data to improve the service.
The team has now created a second prototype of the robot, which is 120 cm tall. This version is more stable and mobile compared to the first prototype (50 cm). The robot can work autonomously for up to six hours and has an improved facial expression and voice synchronization system. The robot is already successfully working in Roman’s clinic, where it greets patients and helps with appointments.
In addition to the physical robot, VUZOLL also offers virtual AI assistants that can integrate on the practice website and in popular messengers such as Telegram, Viber, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook.
VUZOLL claims that the virtual assistant provides advice, makes appointments, provides information about services, and can adjust to the company’s communication style.
To date, about $500,000 has been invested in the startup, mostly from the founder’s own funds. The project team consists of seven specialists, including engineers, programmers, 3D designers, marketers, and electronics engineers.
The price of one physical robot assistant for customers is $5,500. To use the robot’s functions, requires a paid subscription, the cost of which includes AI module updates, CRM integration, and technical support.
The startup is currently preparing certification of the second robot prototype for mass production, and the team is also ready to deploy 10 robots at partner businesses to test the machines.
