The profession has learnt the sad news that Kevin Lewis, a true colossus of the UK dental profession, passed away this week. Colleagues produced an outpouring of tributes online across all social media, the end of an era.
From being a general dental practitioner owning a practice, Dr Lewis [known as Kevin to all], grew in stature as a lecturer, a leader at Dental Protection, and a very regular columnist observing the UK dental scene in FMC’s Dentistry title.
He was a friend to all who new him, no airs and graces, and took time to listen to all shades of opinion.
After graduating from The London Hospital in 1971, he spent 20 years in a full-time role as a general dental practitioner, followed by a further decade part-time while he developed a specialist interest in the dento-legal field. His career with Dental Protection began in 1989 and spanned 27 years, during which he served as a Board Director, dento-legal adviser, and ultimately as Dental Director from 1998 to 2016. He also contributed to the wider Medical Protection Society as a member of its Council and Executive.
In 2017, he was involved in the formation of the College of General Dentistry, helping to form an independent college for the entire dental team. He later served as a College Trustee until 2022 and then as a College Ambassador. As a Founder and Donor, he wrote for the Primary Dental Journal and delivered College webinars and lectures on topics including duty of candour, legal and regulatory risks, professionalism in dentistry, and the prevention of wrong tooth extractions.
Alongside these roles, he served as a long-standing Associate Editor of Dental Practice magazine, providing over four decades of concise and timely commentary on professional and political issues, as well as extensive writing on dento-legal matters. He lectured internationally, and offered consultancy and advisory services across dentistry and healthcare.
His professional distinctions included Fellowship of both the College of General Dentistry and the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, as well as the Diploma of Fellowship of the former FGDP. He was awarded Honorary Memberships of the British, Irish, and New Zealand Dental Associations, and of the British Society for Restorative Dentistry.
GDPUK team and subscribers send condolences to Kevin’s family. The Profession has already expressed how he will be sadly missed.
