Kings' Birthday Honours for Dentistry

Alongside the dozens of celebrities and well-known figures recognised in this year‘s Kings Birthday Honours list, there have been awards to dental professionals in recognition of their outstanding contributions to their community and the country.
Though a little delayed after her departure from the post of Chief Dental Officer for England, Sara Hurley, has now received the traditional CDO leavers package of an honour, with the award of a CBE for services to Dentistry. Since leaving the civil service, Sara Hurley has been at the forefront of the push to reshape how dental care is delivered in the UK, as well as training, through her involvement in the University of Suffolk Dental School and its associated Community Interest Company.
Former Derry dentist, Roz McMullan, has been awarded the OBE for services to mental health and wellbeing in the dentistry profession. Described as the force behind the British Dental Association’s presence in Northern Ireland, and a former BDA president, Dr McMullan has been a leading figure in a ground breaking scheme to support dentists’ mental well-being in Northern Ireland. Aside from her work as a consultant orthodontist in the Western Health and Social Care Trust from 1991 to 2016, Roz established "Probing Stress in Dentistry", which works to raise the awareness of mental well-being in the dental workforce in Northern Ireland and to establish a network of mental health leads to support and signpost dental teams in need.
Roz continues this work and remains a member on the Education, Ethics and Dental Team Working Committee of the BDA. She is part of the collaboration which developed the resource www.supportfordentalteams.org and is co-chair, of the Mental Health Dental Wellness Working Group.
London GDP Linda Greenwall, has been appointed MBE in recognition of her longstanding charitable work in community dentistry. Another dentist bearing out the advice to “ask a busy person,” she founded charity the Dental Wellness Trust in 2011, alongside her work in her long established practice and involvement in dental education.
The Trust has one simple mission, to improve the general health and wellbeing of young children through dental wellness – especially those most in need.
It’s LiveSmart supervised tooth brushing programme was initially set up for underserved communities in South Africa and has since been rolled out in Kenya and now UK schools and nurseries, in Luton and Brent, as well as refugee outreach schemes.
Dr. Fiona Sandom has been awarded an MBE for her outstanding services to dental therapy and the NHS in Wales.
Fiona qualified as a Dental Hygienist from Manchester Dental Hospital in 1993 and as a Dental Therapist in 1999 from Liverpool University Dental Hospital. In 2013 she gained her Masters in Medical Education from Cardiff University, and her PhD from Bangor University in 2023. She currently works part-time in NHS Practice. Since 2004, Fiona has been arranging and delivering postgraduate continual professional development for Wales Deanery.
Dr. Sandom’s unwavering commitment to the prescription-only medicine exemptions project spanned over 11 years—much of it in her own time—driven by her dedication to securing greater clinical autonomy for dental therapists and hygienists.
