On 31st July, the General Dental Council (GDC) celebrated the first anniversary of compulsory registration for dental nurses and dental technicians in the UK. On that day there are almost 44,500 dental nurses on their register and over 7,500 dental technicians. Yet only a fortnight previously the GDC had issued a reminder for those who were paying their annual retention fees for the first time. |

The GDC had reminded DCPs that failure to pay their dues meant that they would be putting their registration at risk. Concerns had been expressed that this might apply to many nurses and technicians. GDPUK asked the GDC how many of them failed to pay before the deadline and received the following statement:
‘We are currently processing payments for the annual retention fee received last week. The recent postal strikes in London have had an impact on our operations – with a delay of up to two weeks in some postal payments reaching us.
‘We are confident that the vast majority of dental care professionals have paid on time, but we’ll be able to release an accurate figure of the number who have paid once we have all the necessary information.
‘We will begin to send out practicing certificates next week, along with information about continuing professional development and CPD return forms, as applicable.
‘Anyone with concerns about whether or not their payment has reached us can contact us on 0800 1777 965.’
